MacBook Pro Intel Common Problems in Dubai? Here's Why and How to Fix It

Why does the MacBook Pro Intel have so many problems?
MacBook Pro Intel models from 2016-2020 have four well-documented design faults that Apple has been criticised for, and that resulted in multiple repair programs. At 6-9 years old, virtually every Intel MacBook Pro in Dubai has experienced at least one of these issues:
- Butterfly keyboard (2016-2019): ultra-thin key mechanism with almost no tolerance for dust. One particle under a key causes it to stop registering or double-register
- AMD GPU solder failure (2017-2019 15-inch): the AMD Radeon Pro 555/560 discrete GPU uses BGA solder bumps that crack under thermal cycling in warm climates
- Flexgate display cable (2016-2019): the display backlight cable is too short, causing it to fray as the lid opens and closes over thousands of cycles
- T2 chip issues (2019-2020): the T2 security chip handles TouchID, Secure Boot, and bridgeOS. Firmware corruption causes system lockout and charging failures
- Thermal throttling (all Intel): Intel Core i7 and i9 CPUs in 2018-2019 MacBook Pro 15/16-inch throttled severely on sustained loads due to undersized heatsinks
Step 1: How do I fix MacBook Pro Intel butterfly keyboard failure?
The butterfly keyboard was used on MacBook Pro 2016-2019 (all models). It is the most common fault we see on Intel MacBook Pros in Dubai. Dubai's sandy environment makes it far worse than in other countries.
- Key not registering: hold the MacBook at a 75-degree angle and use compressed air (two-second bursts, never sustained) across the key in three directions. This dislodges sub-0.1mm dust particles caught under the mechanism
- Key double-registering: same fix as above. If it persists after cleaning, the switch membrane is torn. Individual key replacement costs AED 50-100 per key
- Multiple keys not working after liquid exposure: the butterfly membrane conducts moisture across multiple switches. Full top-case replacement is needed (includes keyboard, battery, trackpad as one unit)
- Entire keyboard dead: the keyboard flex cable, not the keys, has failed. Less common but seen on 2016-2017 models at 7-9 years old

Step 2: How do I know if my MacBook Pro Intel AMD GPU has failed?
The 2017, 2018, and 2019 MacBook Pro 15-inch models have a discrete AMD Radeon Pro GPU alongside the Intel integrated graphics. The AMD GPU uses BGA (ball grid array) solder bumps that crack under repeated thermal expansion and contraction. In Dubai's climate, this happens faster than anywhere else.
Signs of AMD GPU failure:
- Coloured horizontal lines across the screen, especially after the Mac has been running for 10+ minutes and has warmed up
- Screen goes black suddenly during tasks that use the discrete GPU (video editing, gaming, connecting external display)
- Lines appear on external display too: confirms the fault is in the GPU chip, not the internal screen cable
- Mac switches to integrated graphics automatically (check About This Mac → Graphics), the AMD GPU has failed and macOS fell back to Intel UHD
The fix is GPU reball: removing the AMD chip, replacing the solder bumps, and reflowing it back to the board. This is a specialist microsoldering repair.
Step 3: How do I know if my MacBook Pro Intel has Flexgate?
Flexgate affects MacBook Pro 13-inch 2016-2019 and 15-inch 2016-2019. The display backlight cable is marginally too short. Over thousands of lid open/close cycles, it frays at the point where it exits the hinge.
- Stage lighting effect: a row of bright spots along the bottom of the screen that looks like stage footlights. This is partial backlight cable failure
- Screen goes dark when opened past 45 degrees: the cable has frayed to the point where opening the lid further breaks the connection
- Screen works with lid at 45 degrees but goes black fully open: classic Flexgate. The cable works when relaxed but breaks the circuit when stretched
Apple extended the display backlight service program for some models but it has largely expired. Repair involves replacing the display cable assembly, AED 300.
Step 4: How do I fix MacBook Pro T2 chip problems?
The T2 chip was introduced on MacBook Pro 2019 (Intel 15/16-inch). It handles Secure Boot, Touch ID, encrypted storage, and the System Management Controller. T2 faults can make the machine appear completely dead even when it isn't.
- Mac stuck on Apple logo with progress bar: T2 bridgeOS corruption. Fix: hold Option + Shift + Control + Power for 10 seconds to reset the T2. If that doesn't work, DFU restore via another Mac using Apple Configurator 2
- Won't boot after macOS update: bridgeOS failed to update alongside macOS. Same DFU restore procedure
- Won't charge after water damage: the T2 chip controls charging. If the T2 is damaged by liquid, it can block charging entirely even after the board is otherwise dry. T2 rework is required
- Touch ID stops working: this can be T2, or the Touch ID sensor cable. Both are diagnosable on the bench
Step 5: Does Dubai heat affect MacBook Pro Intel?
Intel MacBook Pros run significantly hotter than Apple Silicon at equivalent tasks. The Intel Core i7/i9 TDP is 28-45W versus M1/M2/M3/M4/M5's 10-30W. In Dubai's 35-45°C summer ambient temperature, Intel MacBook Pros throttle harder and faster.
- AMD GPU thermal cycling is the main heat-related failure: warm up, cool down, repeat 365 days per year. In Dubai this cycle is more extreme than anywhere else
- Battery swelling is very common on 6-9 year old Intel units in Dubai. At this age, even a healthy cell has gone through enough heat cycles that swelling risk is significant
- Thermal paste on Intel MacBook Pros should have been replaced at 4-5 years. Any Intel Pro still running original TIM is thermally compromised. Repaste costs AED 150 and typically reduces fan speed and heat by 15-20°C
