Apple Mac Pro Discontinued. Why Apple discontinued the Mac Pro
Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March 2026, removing it from its website on 26 March - a 7-year run that started with the 2019 Intel tower and ended with the 2023 M2 Ultra refresh. Three reasons drove the decision:
- Volume: the Mac Pro was always a niche machine next to the MacBook and iMac lines.
- Mac Studio caught up: the M3 Ultra Mac Studio has more CPU cores, more GPU cores and a higher memory ceiling than the M2 Ultra Mac Pro (table below), at a substantially lower price.
- PCIe is dead on Apple Silicon: Apple Silicon's unified memory architecture cannot expose PCIe lanes to third-party GPUs. The Mac Pro's tower form factor became symbolic, not functional.
Mac Studio Ultra - the new top Mac
When the Mac Pro went, the Mac Studio M3 Ultra became the top Mac, until the M5 Ultra Mac Studio (announced in August 2026) went on sale on 22 September 2026. Against the last Mac Pro, the M3 Ultra already matched or beat it on every line except PCIe:

For audio production, video editing, 3D rendering, and ML training, the Mac Studio M3 Ultra is the better buy. It draws 480W vs the Mac Pro's 1,280W, runs silent, and fits on a desk shelf.
Mac Pro 2019 Intel - still the only Mac for PCIe GPUs (worth keeping)
Both Mac Pros take PCIe cards. Apple says the 2023 M2 Ultra model runs third-party audio and video I/O, storage and network cards with the maker's macOS driver, but not a separate graphics card or the Afterburner card. If your workflow needs a PCIe GPU or Afterburner, the 2019 Intel Mac Pro is theonly Mac that runs them. With the Mac Pro line gone, a serviced 2019 or 2023 Mac Pro is the only way to keep cards inside the machine; a Mac Studio needs a Thunderbolt PCIe chassis.
macOS Tahoe 26 is the last macOS for the 2019 Intel Mac Pro; macOS 27 needs Apple silicon. When Tahoe's security updates end, it keeps running Tahoe unpatched - fine for a sealed, offline studio machine.

Supply is now finite and demand from PCIe-locked workflows is steady.
Workflows that still need a Mac Pro alternative
- Pro Tools HDX (Avid): PCIe DSP cards. They need a Mac Pro or a Thunderbolt PCIe chassis; check Avid's current compatibility list for your exact system.
- Broadcast video I/O (AJA, Blackmagic Decklink 8K): Some have TB3/TB5 boxes - many don't.
- RED workflows pre-V-Raptor: RED Rocket-X PCIe accelerators only run in 2019 Mac Pro.
- Scientific compute (CUDA legacy): Old NVIDIA cards via Mojave-era Mac Pros (cheap 2009-2012 cheese-graters still useful).
- 10GbE + multi-NVMe RAID studios: Sonnet Echo Express III chassis is one option, but native PCIe is more reliable.
External GPU options (limited on Apple Silicon)
Bad news for hopefuls: Apple Silicon Macs have never supported external GPUs; eGPUs work only with Intel Macs. The 2019 Intel Mac Pro can still drive a Sonnet Breakaway with an AMD W6800 over Thunderbolt 3 - but it's slower than an internal MPX module.
Service availability for existing Mac Pro owners
Apple's own service for a discontinued Mac follows its vintage and obsolete policy and depends on parts availability. We keep servicing both the 2019 and the 2023 Mac Pro either way.
We will continue servicing both indefinitely. We hold stock of CPU trays (2019), GPU MPX modules (W5700X, W6800X, W6900X), 1.4kW PSUs, fan modules, and Afterburner cards.
