MacBook Air M2 Screen Lines in Dubai? Horizontal and Vertical Causes and Fixes
Horizontal or vertical lines on a MacBook Air M2 screen are alarming but the cause is almost always a display cable or panel fault, not the logic board. This guide shows you how to tell which it is and what the repair costs in Dubai.
What causes horizontal or vertical lines on a MacBook Air M2 screen?
The MacBook Air M2 uses a Liquid Retina IPS display with a native resolution of 2560x1664 (13-inch) or 2880x1864 (15-inch). When lines appear on this screen, one of three things has failed:
- Display cable fault: the flat flex cable connecting the Liquid Retina panel to the logic board runs through the hinge assembly. After thousands of lid open/close cycles, the cable insulation cracks or the connector loses contact, causing lines that typically appear or shift when the lid is moved.
- LCD panel fault: the Liquid Retina panel itself can develop dead rows of pixels (horizontal lines) or dead columns (vertical lines). This is usually caused by physical impact to the display, liquid ingress near the panel, or manufacturing degradation over time.
- GPU or logic board fault: in rarer cases, the M2 chip's integrated GPU generates corrupted video output, which shows as lines on all connected displays including external monitors. This is a logic board fault, not a screen fault.
Identifying which of these three caused your MacBook Air M2 lines determines whether you need a screen replacement, a logic board repair, or just a software fix.
Distinguishing a cable fault from a panel fault
The most important diagnostic test is free and takes 30 seconds:
The hinge angle test
- Open the MacBook Air M2 to about 45 degrees
- Slowly move the lid, opening and closing, while watching the lines
- Gently press your thumb near the hinge area on each side while the screen is open
If the lines change, appear, or disappear as you move the lid or press near the hinge, the display cable is damaged. The cable is routed through the hinge and is flexing as you move it.
If the lines are completely static regardless of lid position or pressure, the fault is more likely in the panel itself, not the cable.

On the MacBook Air M2, the display cable is part of the screen assembly (it is not separately replaceable as it was on older Intel Air models). This means whether the fault is the cable or the panel, the repair is the same: full screen assembly replacement.
When screen lines on MacBook Air M2 point to a GPU or logic board fault
A GPU fault is less common than a display cable or panel fault but it is important to rule out before replacing the screen, because a screen replacement will not fix a GPU fault.
To test for a GPU fault:
- Connect an external monitor to the MacBook Air M2 via USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort
- Close the built-in display lid (clamshell mode) so only the external monitor is active
- Check whether the lines appear on the external monitor as well

The M2 chip's integrated GPU does not have a separate graphics card that fails. Isolated lines with a clean external monitor output almost always confirm a screen-only fault.
Software checks before booking a repair
In a small number of cases, macOS display driver bugs cause visual artefacts that look like hardware lines. Run these checks first:
Boot into Safe Mode
- Shut down the MacBook Air M2
- Press and hold the Power button until "Loading startup options" appears
- Select your startup disk, then hold Shift and click "Continue in Safe Mode"
- Observe whether the lines are still present in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads only Apple's own display drivers. If the lines disappear in Safe Mode, a third-party app or extension is causing the issue, not hardware. If the lines persist in Safe Mode, hardware is the cause.
Update macOS
Go to System Settings → General → Software Update. Apple has patched display-related bugs in several Sonoma and Sequoia point releases. Install any pending updates and test again.
Reset display calibration
- Go to System Settings → Displays
