MacBook Air M4 Common Problems in Dubai? Fix Guide 2025
MacBook Air M4 is the most popular Air model we see in Dubai in 2025. We repair dozens each month. Here are the six problems that come through the door most often, and what to do about each one.

MacBook Air M4 common problems: what we see in Dubai
The MacBook Air M4 launched in early 2025 and became the top-selling MacBook model in the UAE within months. After repairing dozens per month in our Dubai workshop, the same six faults come up repeatedly:
- Battery below 18h rated life: real-world 10-13h in Dubai conditions
- Thermal throttle in Dubai ambient heat: sustained tasks slow to a crawl at 35-40°C
- Occasional keyboard double-typing: firmware bug on early production units
- WiFi drops after sleep: macOS Sequoia 15.0 and 15.1 bug, fixed in 15.2
- USB-C not charging with non-Apple adapter: 20W phone chargers cannot sustain the M4 under load
- Sky Blue colour showing fingerprints and heat discolouration: cosmetic, most common in desert-climate use
Work through the relevant section below. Most of these are free software fixes. Where hardware is needed, we list current prices in Dubai with same-day turnaround.
MacBook Air M4 battery draining too fast in Dubai
Apple rates the M4 Air at 18 hours. Real-world in Dubai, most users see 10-13h. That gap is not a hardware defect: it's four fixable causes.
- Screen at maximum brightness: Dubai glare from floor-to-ceiling windows pushes most users to 100% brightness: the display is the largest power draw on the Air
- Teams or Zoom running in the background: closing the window is not quitting the app; use Cmd+Q or Activity Monitor
- iCloud sync after a Sequoia update: Photos, Documents, and Desktop all re-upload when you upgrade macOS
- Spotlight re-indexing: appears as "mds_stores" in Activity Monitor → Energy; normal for 24h after updates, abnormal if ongoing
Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight → "Activity Monitor") and click the Energy tab. Sort by Energy Impact descending. Kill any process above 200 that you don't need. Enable Low Power Mode (System Settings → Battery) to cap the M4 chip's maximum output and add 2-3h of real use.
If capacity in System Settings → Battery shows below 80%, the cell itself is degraded. Battery replacement for M4 Air is AED 450 (13-inch) or AED 500 (15-inch) →
MacBook Air M4 overheating and thermal throttling
The M4 chip is more efficient than the M3, but the Air remains completely fanless. There is no cooling fan and no active airflow. Heat dissipates entirely through the aluminium chassis.
In Dubai summer (June-September), ambient temperatures hit 35-40°C indoors in poorly air-conditioned rooms. When you combine that ambient temperature with a sustained task like video export, Xcode compilation, or a 4K video call, the M4 throttles its clock speed to protect the chip. We see it drop as low as 600 MHz on a chip rated for 4.4 GHz.
Symptoms of M4 Air thermal throttle:
- Machine suddenly becomes very slow mid-task, no warning
- Chassis is very hot to the touch near the hinge area
- iStatMenus or coconutBattery shows CPU frequency well below base clock
- Video export time doubles or triples compared to expected
The fix is environmental, not a repair. Use the Air on a hard flat surface. A soft surface like a pillow blocks the underside airflow path. Charge at night when the room is cooler. Enable Low Power Mode during long renders. If the machine throttles at idle with no load (room temperature, light browser use), bring it in: this can indicate a thermal pad failure or paste degradation, which we inspect and fix from AED 350.
MacBook Air M4 keyboard double-typing issue
A subset of MacBook Air M4 units from the first three months of production (January-March 2025) shipped with a firmware issue causing single key presses to register as two characters. Typing "hello" would produce "hheelllloo".
Apple issued a fix in macOS Sequoia 15.1.1. Check first: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update. If you are on 15.2 or later, the firmware fix is already applied.
If double-typing persists after the update, the cause is software key-repeat settings:
- System Settings → Keyboard
- Increase Key Repeat Rate (slide right)
- Increase Delay Until Repeat (slide right)
Hardware double-typing, where the key physically registers twice due to a faulty butterfly-style mechanism or debris under a scissor switch, is rare on the M4 Air's Magic Keyboard. If the problem persists after all software steps, a top-case replacement is AED 800. Apple may cover this under warranty on units purchased in 2025.
MacBook Air M4 WiFi dropping after sleep
This is a known macOS Sequoia bug, not a hardware fault. On Sequoia 15.0 and 15.1, the WiFi driver fails to re-associate with the access point after the M4 Air wakes from sleep. The symptom: WiFi icon shows connected, but no pages load for 30-60 seconds, or it drops entirely and you have to toggle WiFi off and on.
Apple fixed this in macOS Sequoia 15.2. Update immediately: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update.
If you are already on 15.2 and still dropping, the problem in Dubai is different: dense WiFi environments. Buildings in Business Bay, DIFC, and JLT often have 60+ WiFi networks all competing on 2.4GHz. The M4 Air's WiFi 6E radio constantly deauthenticates and reassociates in that environment. Solution:
- Force 5GHz connection in your router settings by creating a separate SSID for 5GHz
- Connect to the 5GHz-only SSID and forget the 2.4GHz one on your Mac
- WiFi 6E (6GHz band) is available on the M4 Air. If your router supports it, use it: it is almost interference-free in UAE buildings
MacBook Air M4 not charging or slow charging
The M4 Air ships with a 35W dual USB-C adapter. Under CPU load, the M4 draws up to 30W from the charger. This means a 20W phone charger or a cheap AED 15 adapter from Carrefour will not charge the M4 while you are using it: the battery actually drains while "charging".
- Use the included 35W adapter or a 45W+ USB-C PD charger: anything below 30W is insufficient under load
- Check the USB-C port for lint and dust: Dubai's construction environment means USB-C ports fill with fine dust within months; clean with a dry wooden toothpick, not metal
- Try the other USB-C port: the M4 Air has two USB-C ports, both support charging; if one doesn't charge, the port controller on that side may be faulty
- MagSafe 3 connector: check for metal particle accumulation from the magnet; wipe monthly with a dry cloth
USB-C port replacement (when physically damaged or controller failure confirmed) is AED 350 at our Dubai workshop. We test both ports before and after repair.
Dubai-specific MacBook Air M4 problems
Several faults we see in Dubai are less common in cooler climates. Worth knowing:
- Sky Blue heat discolouration: the most popular M4 colour in the UAE, but the anodised finish shows a faint yellowing near the vent area (hinge) after 12+ months in 35°C+ ambient use. This is cosmetic and not covered by warranty. No fix other than chassis replacement (expensive, not recommended for cosmetic reasons).
- Swollen battery from car heat: we see this regularly in UAE summer. Leaving a MacBook Air M4 in a parked car, even for 45 minutes in July, exposes the battery to 60-80°C. Lithium-ion cells swell at sustained temperatures above 45°C. If your trackpad feels raised or doesn't click, stop using the machine immediately and bring it in. Swollen cell removal is AED 450 and urgent.
- MagSafe 3 magnet dust accumulation: the MagSafe 3 port on the M4 Air attracts metal particles from UAE construction dust. A dirty MagSafe connection causes intermittent charging drops. Wipe the connector and port with a dry cloth monthly.
- Condensation from rapid air-conditioning transition: walking from 42°C outside into 18°C office AC causes brief condensation on cold aluminium surfaces. Allow the Air 10-15 minutes to reach room temperature before opening and using it.
MacBook Air M4 vs M3: what actually changed
Many customers ask whether to get M4 or M3 (now discounted). Here is what is meaningfully different and what is not:
| Feature | M4 Air (2025) | M3 Air (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Rated battery life | 18h | 18h |
| WiFi standard | WiFi 6E | WiFi 6E |
| Charger included | 35W dual USB-C | 35W dual USB-C |
| Colour options | 4 (inc Sky Blue) | 3 (no Sky Blue) |
| macOS stability (Jun 2026) | Stable on Sequoia 15.2+ | No known WiFi bugs |
| Neural Engine speed | 38 TOPS (faster) | 18 TOPS |
| CPU speed | Meaningfully faster | Fast enough for most tasks |
| Screen quality | Identical Liquid Retina | Identical Liquid Retina |
The M4 is a genuine upgrade in AI and ML tasks. For everyday browser, email, and Zoom use, M3 and M4 are indistinguishable. If you find M3 at AED 300-500 cheaper, it is a rational choice. M3 has a longer macOS stability track record as of mid-2026.

Frequently asked questions
- Apple rates the M4 Air at 18 hours. Real-world in Dubai with mixed use (browser, email, Zoom, Teams), expect 10-13 hours. If you are getting below 8 hours on light tasks like writing and browsing, either a rogue background app is running or the battery cell has degraded. Check Activity Monitor → Energy tab first. If capacity in System Settings → Battery shows below 80%, replace the battery.
- No. The MacBook Air M4 is completely fanless. Heat dissipates through the aluminium chassis only. This means it is more sensitive to Dubai's high ambient temperatures than fan-cooled laptops. In a 35°C room under sustained load, the M4 will throttle its clock speed to prevent damage. Use it on a hard flat surface and enable Low Power Mode for long tasks in summer.
- Yes, in macOS Sequoia 15.2. The WiFi-drops-after-sleep bug affected Sequoia 15.0 and 15.1. Update via Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update. If you are already on 15.2 and still dropping, the issue is likely your building's 2.4GHz congestion. Force 5GHz or 6GHz by creating a separate SSID in your router settings.
- Yes. Screen replacement for the M4 Air 13-inch is AED 600, and the 15-inch is AED 700. We use OEM-grade panels with the same colour calibration and brightness as the original. Same-day service if you drop off before 11am. 12-month warranty on the replacement panel.
- 45-60 minutes at our Dubai workshop. We bench-test capacity and cycle count after fitting to confirm the new cell is performing correctly. Drop off before 11am and collect the same day.
- Yes, if you find it at a discount. The M4 is marginally slower than the M5 but runs cooler in practice (lower TDP under light loads), has stable macOS drivers as of mid-2026, and is typically AED 300-500 cheaper. For most users, browser, email, Zoom, Office, the difference between M4 and M5 is not noticeable in daily use.
