MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017-2019 with discrete AMD Radeon Pro GPUs have a documented solder joint failure at the AMD GPU BGA package. In Dubai, where thermal cycling between air-conditioned offices and outdoor heat is more extreme than Apple's test conditions, GPU solder failures have appeared earlier and more frequently than in cooler climates. GPU BGA reball costs AED 800-1,200 in Dubai versus logic board replacement at AED 2,500+.

Why does MacBook Pro 2017-2019 15-inch AMD GPU fail?

The MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017, 2018, and 2019 models include a discrete AMD Radeon Pro GPU (Radeon Pro 555/560 in 2017, Radeon Pro 555X/560X in 2018-2019). This GPU is packaged in a BGA (Ball Grid Array) chip: hundreds of tiny solder balls connect the GPU die to the logic board:

  • Thermal cycling stress: every heat/cool cycle causes the GPU package to expand and contract slightly. Over thousands of cycles, the solder balls at the corners of the package (which experience the most stress) develop micro-cracks. Eventually the crack propagates far enough to break electrical contact
  • Lead-free solder brittleness: post-2006 ROHS compliance required lead-free solder. Lead-free solder is harder and more brittle than leaded solder, making it more susceptible to thermal fatigue cracking under repeated cycling
  • AMD Radeon Pro thermal output: the discrete GPU generates significant heat even in light use. macOS' automatic GPU switching (iGPU for light tasks, dGPU for demanding tasks) means the AMD GPU repeatedly heats and cools multiple times per hour, creating rapid thermal cycles that fatigue the solder joints faster than a GPU that stays at one temperature

Step 1: How do I identify MacBook Pro Intel AMD GPU failure symptoms?

  • Lines or artifacts during GPU-intensive tasks: video editing, gaming, or even just scrolling in Chrome can trigger the dGPU and produce visible rendering artifacts: horizontal lines, colour corruption, or flickering panels
  • Black screen on wake from sleep: the most common presentation. Machine sleeps, wakes, but display remains black. Often recovers after waiting 30-60 seconds or pressing any key. This correlates with the GPU failing to negotiate its power-up state
  • External monitor not detected: the HDMI port on 2016-2019 MacBook Pro 15-inch routes through the dGPU. If the dGPU fails, HDMI output fails while the Thunderbolt ports (which can also use iGPU) may still work
  • System hangs during video playback: DRM-protected video on Netflix or Apple TV often forces the dGPU. If the dGPU is failing, DRM video triggers hangs or crashes while other content plays fine

Step 2: Disable automatic GPU switching to work around AMD dGPU failure

  • System Preferences, Battery, Battery (tab), uncheck "Automatic graphics switching"
  • This forces the machine to use only the Intel integrated GPU, slower for GPU tasks but completely avoids the failing AMD chip
  • After disabling: restart. If the display issues disappear, the AMD dGPU is confirmed as the fault
  • This is a workaround only: the machine will run cooler and more stable, and external HDMI will still not work (HDMI routes through AMD on these models)
  • On some severely affected machines, the dGPU failure has progressed to the point where even with GPU switching disabled, the failing GPU causes system instability. In this case, repair is the only path

Step 3: Apple GPU repair program eligibility

  • Apple ran a "MacBook Pro Video Issues" service program for 2017 MacBook Pro 15-inch with AMD Radeon Pro 555/560. This program is now expired (ended 2022)
  • For 2018-2019 models: no official repair program was run. Apple offered component board repair under AppleCare+, but out-of-warranty cost was full logic board replacement
  • Independent repair: BGA reball (reflowing or replacing the AMD GPU solder balls) is an established procedure at specialist board-level repair shops in Dubai. Cost is AED 800-1,200 vs Apple's AED 2,500+ board replacement

Step 4: Data backup before MacBook Pro Intel GPU repair

  • If the machine is still functional with GPU switching disabled, back up immediately via Time Machine before any repair work
  • Logic board repair (even BGA reball) involves applying significant heat to the board. While the SSD is physically separated from the GPU area, thermal stress during GPU reflow can in rare cases affect nearby components
  • Connect an external drive and run Time Machine backup. If iCloud is active, ensure Desktop and Documents have synced
  • We back up data ourselves before starting any board-level repair, but having your own backup is always the safest approach

Does Dubai heat trigger Intel MacBook Pro AMD GPU solder failure?

  • Yes, significantly. Dubai's temperature swing between air-conditioned office (20°C) and outdoor summer (40°C) means the MacBook Pro experiences wide temperature excursions when moved between environments. Each excursion is a thermal stress cycle for the GPU BGA solder joints
  • A Dubai user who commutes with the MacBook Pro (cool AC car, hot walk to office, cool office, hot outdoor lunch) may subject the machine to 5-6 significant thermal cycles per day versus 1-2 for a user who keeps the machine in one temperature-stable environment
  • Dubai's ambient temperature also means that when the dGPU is active, it runs hotter than in cooler climates (ambient temperature sets the floor for cooling). A dGPU that reaches 85°C in a London office may reach 95°C doing the same task in a Dubai summer office: higher temperatures mean more thermal expansion per cycle and faster solder fatigue

Which Intel MacBook Pro models have AMD GPU solder failure?

ModelAMD GPUFailure risk
MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017Radeon Pro 555 or 560High: most documented failures, Apple ran repair program
MacBook Pro 15-inch 2018Radeon Pro 555X or 560XHigh: same BGA architecture, no Apple program
MacBook Pro 15-inch 2019Radeon Pro 555X or 560XModerate: newer, but same thermal stress mechanism
MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019 (Intel)AMD Radeon Pro 5300M/5500MLower: different board design, newer packaging
MacBook Pro 13-inch Intel (any year)Intel iGPU only: no AMD dGPUNot affected: no discrete GPU

BGA reball vs logic board replacement for Intel MacBook Pro GPU fault

  • BGA reball: the failing AMD GPU chip is removed, old solder balls are cleaned, new solder balls are applied, and the chip is reflowed back onto the board. When successful, GPU function is fully restored. 3-month warranty on the reball joint. Success rate approximately 85-90% at our Dubai workshop
  • Logic board replacement: Apple's default response. Costs AED 2,500+ and provides a refurbished board (which may itself be a rework of a previously-failed board). No data loss since SSD stays with original board, but the SSD is returned to you and you reinstall it in the replacement board
  • When to choose replacement over reball: if the board has additional faults (T2 chip issue, charging IC fault), if the machine has significant liquid corrosion, or if reball has already been attempted once and failed again within 6 months

Frequently asked questions

  • Key signs: video artifacts (lines, corruption) when doing GPU-intensive tasks, black screen on wake from sleep, external HDMI not detected while Thunderbolt ports work, system hangs during DRM video. Confirm by disabling automatic graphics switching (System Preferences, Battery): if all symptoms disappear using Intel iGPU only, the AMD dGPU is the fault.
