Why does MacBook Pro M1 battery swell at 4-5 years old?

Lithium polymer batteries swell when electrochemical degradation inside the cell generates gas. This is a normal failure mode for aging lithium cells:

• Electrolyte decomposition: after 800-1,000 charge cycles, the liquid electrolyte inside lithium cells begins to decompose chemically. This generates carbon dioxide and other gases inside the sealed cell pouch. As gas accumulates, the pouch inflates
• Overcharging at high temperature: lithium cells kept at 100% charge in warm conditions (plugged in overnight in a Dubai summer) accelerate electrolyte decomposition. Enabling Optimised Battery Charging reduces this risk going forward, but cannot reverse existing damage
• Physical deformation stress: once gas starts accumulating, the expanding cell presses against the trackpad assembly above it. This is why the trackpad click changes: the swelling physically lifts the trackpad off its click mechanism
• Age threshold in warm climates: MacBook Pro M1 battery cells are entering their typical swelling window (4-5 years of daily use at 35°C average) for Dubai purchases made in late 2020-2021

Step 1: How do I identify MacBook Pro M1 battery swelling?

• Trackpad test: press the trackpad corner (bottom-left) firmly. If it feels spongy, does not click cleanly, or clicks on the top-left instead of bottom-left, the battery is pushing up against it from below
• Flat surface test: place the M1 on a glass table and press the corner. If it rocks (was never doing this before), the bottom case is bowed outward from battery pressure
• Gap inspection: look at the seam between top and bottom case with the M1 open and closed. A visible gap where the two halves don't meet flush is a clear sign of swelling. You should not be able to fit a credit card between the case halves at any point
• Battery health report: System Settings, Battery. If it shows "Service Recommended" or "Service Battery" and the machine is 4+ years old, swelling may have already begun internally even if not yet visible
