The MacBook Pro M4 brought the first OLED display to the MacBook lineup. First-generation OLED panels, new Thunderbolt 5 ports, and macOS Sequoia bugs created a set of issues specific to M4 owners in Dubai. Most are free to fix. Screen repair starts from AED 700.

Why does the MacBook Pro M4 have problems?

The MacBook Pro M4 (released November 2024) made two major changes to the MacBook Pro lineup: it was the first MacBook Pro to use an OLED display, and it introduced Thunderbolt 5 on Pro and Max models. Both are first-generation implementations with known early-batch issues.

  1. First-gen OLED MacBook Pro: dead pixels, uniformity banding, and colour shift at off-angles appear more often on first-batch OLED than on mature mini-LED panels
  2. Thunderbolt 5 hub compatibility: existing TB3 and TB4 docks need firmware updates to work correctly at full TB5 speeds
  3. macOS Sequoia (15.0-15.1) bugs: the M4 shipped with Sequoia which had documented Wi-Fi drops and power management regressions, both fixed in 15.2+
  4. Base model 16GB memory: the M4 Neural Engine is more active than M3, increasing background task memory consumption on the base 16GB config
  5. Thinner 14-inch chassis: the M4 14-inch runs warmer than the M3 14-inch under sustained M4 Pro workloads due to the revised thermal design

Step 1: How do I check my MacBook Pro M4 OLED display for problems?

The M4 is the first MacBook Pro with OLED. First-gen OLED MacBook Pro panels showed a higher rate of uniformity complaints and dead pixels than the mini-LED panels in M1, M2, and M3 models. Here's how to check yours:

  • Grey screen uniformity test: open a solid grey fullscreen image at 50% brightness. Any visible darker or lighter bands on the left or right edge are panel uniformity variation. Mild banding within 5% luminance is within spec; visible banding at normal viewing distance is not
  • Dead pixel check: open a solid black fullscreen, then solid white. A single pixel that is always lit on black (bright dot) or always off on white (dark dot) is a dead pixel. Apple's policy: one or more dead pixels within 3 inches of screen centre qualifies for replacement
  • Colour shift at angles: OLED panels shift colour (often green or blue tint) when viewed from 30+ degrees off-axis. This is normal for OLED. It is not normal on the M4 display viewed directly head-on
  • Image retention test: leave a high-contrast static image for 30 minutes, then switch to a solid grey screen. Faint ghosting that clears in under 60 seconds is normal OLED behaviour. Persistent ghosting beyond 2 minutes is a fault

Step 2: Does Thunderbolt 5 cause problems on MacBook Pro M4?

MacBook Pro M4 Pro and M4 Max have Thunderbolt 5 on all USB-C ports (base M4 has Thunderbolt 4). TB5 delivers 120Gbps bandwidth, but requires updated dock firmware.

  • Dock shows as USB 2.0 speed: old TB4 docks without updated firmware fall back to low-speed USB. Fix: download the latest firmware update from your dock manufacturer (Belkin, OWC, CalDigit all have TB5 firmware updates)
  • 4K external display at 30Hz instead of 60Hz: TB5 can power two 6K displays at 60Hz, but the cable and monitor must both be TB5 certified. A TB3 cable limits you to TB3 speeds. Use a USB4 40Gbps or TB5 cable
  • Dock charges at 30W instead of 140W: TB5 power delivery negotiation sometimes fails with older USB-C PD chargers. Use the supplied MagSafe or the official Apple 140W USB-C charger for full charging speed

Step 3: How do I check MacBook Pro M4 thermal throttling?

The M4 Pro in the 14-inch chassis runs warmer than the M3 Pro in the same chassis because the M4 Pro has more active cores and the chassis was not significantly revised. Under sustained video export, compilation, or ML training, throttling appears after 10-15 minutes.

In Dubai's summer, ambient temperature pushes the M4's thermal headroom down by 10-15°C versus an air-conditioned European office. Ensure the M4 sits on a hard flat surface, never on a bed or sofa that blocks the bottom vents.

Step 4: Does 16GB RAM cause problems on MacBook Pro M4?

Apple doubled the base RAM to 16GB on M4 (from 8GB on some older configs), but the M4's Neural Engine is significantly more capable and macOS Sequoia schedules more on-device ML tasks by default.

  • Activity Monitor → Memory tab: check memory pressure gauge. Orange for brief periods is normal. Persistent red means your workload exceeds 16GB and is swapping to SSD
  • Biggest offenders: Chrome (each tab is a separate process), Electron apps (Slack, VS Code, Figma), and any active AI tools running local models
  • Workaround: Safari uses 30-40% less memory than Chrome for the same tabs. Switching browsers is the fastest free upgrade on a 16GB M4

Step 5: Does Dubai heat affect MacBook Pro M4?

The M4's OLED display is more sensitive to heat than the mini-LED in M3. OLED organic compounds degrade irreversibly above 55-60°C, and a car dashboard in UAE summer hits 80-90°C.

  • Never leave the M4 MacBook Pro in a parked car in Dubai, even 20 minutes can cause permanent OLED damage and battery degradation
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass in Dubai offices: if sunlight hits the closed lid, internal temperatures rise significantly even when the machine is off. Use a sleeve or keep it away from direct sun
  • Optimised Battery Charging (System Settings → Battery) stops the battery sitting at 100% overnight, reducing heat-accelerated cell degradation

When does MacBook Pro M4 need a logic board repair?

Logic board faults on M4 are rare but show specific symptoms distinct from software or peripheral issues:

  • Multiple ports fail simultaneously with no software fix
  • MacBook won't power on with known-good charger and fresh charge
  • Random shutdown with no thermal event in system logs (Console → kernel)
  • Internal display works but all USB-C ports are dead for video output

Frequently asked questions

  • Faint uniformity banding on the left or right edge of first-gen OLED MacBook Pro M4 panels is a known issue with early batches. If the banding is visible at normal viewing distances on a solid grey background, this qualifies as a display defect. Under warranty this is a free screen replacement. Out of warranty we replace OLED panels from AED 700.
