What makes the M1 Air battery different
The MacBook Air M1 (2020) uses a 49.9 Wh lithium-ion pouch cell rated for 1,000 cycles. Apple quotes up to 18 hours of battery life — but that assumes a new, full-capacity cell. At 700–900 cycles and 70–80% health, the M1 Air typically delivers 10–12 hours instead of 18. Replacement restores that full 18-hour window.
Unlike Intel Macs, the M1 Air requires a BMS (Battery Management System) firmware re-pair after battery replacement. Without re-pair, macOS will show an inaccurate capacity reading and may not charge correctly.
