Where to Buy a Refurbished MacBook: 5 Sources Ranked
A refurbished MacBook can save you 30–45%, but where you buy it determines whether you're getting a bargain or a risk. Here's every source ranked honestly.

1. Apple Certified Refurbished (safest, least discount)
Apple's own refurbished store sells units that were returned, repaired to new condition, and tested to Apple's full standards. Every unit comes with:
- 1-year Apple warranty (same as new)
- New battery and outer shell where needed
- All original accessories and a new box
- Eligibility for AppleCare+
The discount is typically 15–20% off new, modest, but the risk is near-zero. The selection is limited and sells out fast. Available via apple.com/ae/shop/refurbished.
2. Independent Apple repair shops (best balance in Dubai)
Reputable independent shops, including ours, sell refurbished MacBooks they've serviced and tested in-house. What to expect from a good shop:
- Full hardware diagnostic before sale
- Battery replaced if health is below 85%
- 30–90 day warranty on the unit
- Transparent about any cosmetic wear
Discount is typically 25–40% vs new. The key advantage over Dubizzle: if something fails within the warranty period, you have recourse. Ask to see the diagnostic report before buying.
3. Authorised Apple resellers
Shops like Jumbo, iSTYLE, and Virgin Megastore occasionally carry refurbished or open-box units. These are typically Apple Certified (same program as above), just sold through a third party. Prices are similar to buying direct from Apple. Worth checking if Apple's own store has no stock in your preferred spec.
4. Dubizzle and second-hand marketplaces (highest discount, highest risk)
Dubizzle can offer 35–50% off new, but it's buyer-beware. Before meeting:
- Ask for the serial number and check it on Apple's coverage page, confirm the model, and whether it's iCloud-locked or activation-locked.
- Check if it's been reported lost or stolen (Apple's coverage checker shows this).
- Meet somewhere you can run a quick diagnostic or bring it to us for a free check before you pay.
- Battery health: check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Anything below 80% needs a replacement (AED 450–700 depending on model), factor that into the price.
- Never pay before you've powered it on, logged into a guest account, and run the display, keyboard, trackpad and speakers through basic tests.
5. Corporate and trade-in programmes
Some companies off-load MacBooks when upgrading their fleet, these are often well-maintained, lightly used machines. Look for listings from verified business sellers on Dubizzle, or ask us: we occasionally have ex-corporate units available with full diagnostics done.
What to always check regardless of source
- iCloud / Activation Lock: If the previous owner's Apple ID is still linked, the MacBook is a paperweight for you. Verify it's fully signed out before handing over money.
- Battery cycle count and health: A MacBook Air battery is rated for 1,000 cycles; MacBook Pro is 1,000 too. Check via About This Mac → System Report → Power.
- Screen: Look for dead pixels, backlight bleed and coating wear (common on older 2015–2019 Retina screens). Check in a dim environment.
- Keyboard: Test every key. Butterfly keyboards (2016–2019) are notorious for key failures; scissor keyboards (2020+) are reliable.
If you're unsure about any unit, bring it to us before paying. We'll run a full diagnostic, free of charge, so you know exactly what you're buying. Call or WhatsApp 055 741 3706. We're at Concord Tower, Dubai Media City, open Mon-Sat 9am–10pm.
Frequently asked questions
- Yes, if you buy from the right source. Apple Certified Refurbished or a reputable independent repair shop are both safe. Dubizzle can work but requires careful checks, iCloud lock, battery health, screen, and keyboard, before you hand over money.
- Apple Certified Refurbished is typically 15–20% cheaper. Independent shops offer 25–40%. Dubizzle can be 35–50% cheaper but with no warranty. Factor in battery replacement (AED 450–700) if battery health is below 80–85%.
- If a MacBook has iCloud Activation Lock enabled, it's tied to the previous owner's Apple ID. You cannot use it without their credentials. Always check via Apple's coverage page with the serial number before buying, a locked MacBook is essentially worthless to you.
- If you buy Apple Certified Refurbished, you get a full 1-year Apple warranty. Reputable independent shops offer 30–90 days. Dubizzle private sellers offer no warranty. You can also bring any MacBook to us for a pre-purchase inspection before you commit.
