iPhone water damage repair in Dubai starts from AED 249 and the first 10 minutes after exposure are critical: power off, do not charge, and bring it in dry rather than using a rice trick that delays real treatment.

Why does water damage iPhones even with IP ratings?

Apple's IP rating certifies resistance, not immunity. An iPhone 15 Pro with an IP68 rating is tested to survive submersion at 6 metres for 30 minutes in still, fresh water under lab conditions. That test is performed on a new, undamaged phone. After a year of daily use, the adhesive seals around the display, SIM tray, and speaker grilles degrade. Drops, heat cycling in Dubai's climate, and screen repairs that disturb the seals all reduce the effective water resistance below the rated spec.

Water itself is not highly conductive, but dissolved minerals, salts, and chlorine change that entirely. Pool water, sea water, and even Dubai tap water carry enough ionic content to form conductive bridges across logic board traces the moment they make contact with a live circuit. Corrosion begins in minutes: the dissolved ions react with exposed copper, depositing oxide and chloride compounds that break connections and short adjacent pads.

The result is that a phone rated IP68 can still suffer significant board damage from a brief submersion if the seals have degraded, if the liquid is anything other than fresh water, or if the phone is charged or powered on while wet. IP ratings tell you the phone tried to protect itself; they do not mean water damage cannot happen.

Step 1: What do I do in the first 10 minutes?

The actions you take in the first 10 minutes after water exposure have a greater effect on the outcome than any repair technique. The goal is simple: stop corrosion from progressing before the phone reaches a technician.

  1. Power off immediately: if the phone is on, hold the side button and volume down, then slide to power off. Do not press the home button or any other buttons repeatedly.
  2. Do not charge it: connecting power to a wet board is the fastest way to destroy components that might otherwise be recoverable. Even wireless charging is off limits.
  3. Do not press the speaker or microphone grilles: pressing forces liquid deeper into the chassis.
  4. Remove the SIM tray: use the ejector pin to open the SIM slot and allow any pooled water to drain from that cavity.
  5. Stand the phone port-down: gravity pulls liquid away from the logic board toward the Lightning or USB-C port where it can drain. Do not shake the phone violently.
  6. Wipe the exterior dry: use a lint-free cloth to remove surface water. Do not blow compressed air into the ports.
  7. Contact us immediately: WhatsApp Shafiq on 055 741 3706 and we will arrange same-day collection anywhere in Dubai.

Do not put the phone in a bag of rice, silica gel, or near a fan. These measures do nothing to stop corrosion; they only delay the ultrasonic cleaning that can actually save the board. Every hour spent in a bag of rice is an hour of corrosion that cannot be undone.

Step 2: Does rice actually work for water damage?

No. The rice myth is one of the most harmful pieces of consumer advice circulating online. Rice is a desiccant: it absorbs ambient moisture from the air around it. It cannot draw liquid out from inside a sealed electronic device, and it cannot reverse corrosion that has already started on a logic board.

In practice, placing a wet phone in rice delays professional treatment by 24 to 72 hours, during which corrosion is actively spreading. We regularly receive phones that were put in rice for two days and arrive with significantly worse board damage than phones brought in immediately. The rice provides false reassurance that "something is being done" while the actual damage compounds.

The only thing that stops corrosion is removing the liquid and the mineral deposits it leaves behind. That requires ultrasonic cleaning with isopropyl alcohol at 40 kHz, a process that dislodges contamination from between chip pins and under BGA packages at a level no home remedy can reach. Skip the rice; bring it in.

Step 3: How do I know how severe the damage is?

Severity depends on four factors: how long the phone was submerged, what liquid it was in, whether it was powered on during or after exposure, and how quickly it reached a technician. Some of these can be assessed from the outside; most require opening the phone.

  • Liquid Contact Indicators (LCIs): Apple places white adhesive dots inside the SIM tray slot and at the headphone jack (older models). These turn bright red on contact with liquid. A red LCI confirms water entry, but a white LCI does not guarantee no damage.
  • Speaker distortion: muffled or crackling audio indicates liquid in the speaker chamber. This is often recoverable after cleaning.
  • Charging failure: if the phone will not charge at all, the charging IC or the USB-C port flex may be shorted. This requires component-level repair.
  • Touch issues or display lines: water between the display and the digitiser causes these symptoms. The display itself may need replacement.
  • No power at all: this is the most serious symptom. It can mean a shorted battery protection circuit, a damaged PMIC, or widespread board corrosion. Recovery is still possible but board-level work is required.

Our diagnosis is free and takes approximately 30 minutes. We open the phone, inspect the board under magnification, and tell you exactly which components are affected before any paid work begins.

Step 4: Can I charge the iPhone to see if it works?

No. Charging a water-damaged iPhone is the single most damaging thing you can do after exposure. Here is what happens: the charging circuitry receives power from the charger and attempts to regulate it through components that may have conductive liquid bridges across their pins. This causes high-current short circuits that can burn out the charging IC, the PMIC (power management IC), and in worst cases create localised heat damage on the logic board itself.

We see this pattern regularly: a customer's phone survived a pool drop with minor corrosion, they charged it to test it, and the charging IC was destroyed in the process. What would have been a AED 249 ultrasonic clean became a AED 450 component repair because of one charging attempt.

Wait until a technician has inspected and dried the board before applying any power. Even if the phone appears to turn on normally after a water event, power it off and bring it in: intermittent faults from residual moisture can cause sudden component failure days later.

Dubai pool and sea water: is it worse than fresh water?

Yes, significantly. Dubai's pools, beaches, and marinas are the most common sources of iPhone water damage we see. Both pool water and sea water are far more damaging than fresh tap water, and Dubai's ambient temperature of 35°C or above in summer accelerates the damage further.

  • Pool water: contains chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) and pH-balancing chemicals. Chloride ions are highly reactive with copper traces and tin-lead solder joints. Corrosion from pool water typically advances twice as fast as fresh water damage at the same temperature.
  • Sea water (Arabian Gulf): the Gulf has higher salinity than average ocean water, around 4% salt concentration versus a global average of 3.5%. Sea water damage is the most aggressive we treat. Recovery rates drop unless the phone reaches us within 2 to 3 hours.
  • Rain: Dubai rain is infrequent but when it occurs, the water picks up dust, sand, and mineral particulates from the air and surfaces. Rain water damage is closer to mineral-rich tap water than pure fresh water.
  • Heat amplification: at 35°C or above, corrosion chemistry accelerates. A phone left in a car in July while the owner is deciding what to do will have substantially worse board damage than the same phone taken to a repair shop immediately at the same outdoor temperature.

If the exposure involved pool or sea water, tell us when you contact us. We prioritise these cases because the damage window is shorter, and we adjust the ultrasonic cleaning protocol to address chloride-specific corrosion products.

IP67 vs IP68: what protection does my iPhone have?

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating system is defined by IEC standard 60529. The two digits after "IP" indicate solid-particle protection (6 = dust-tight) and liquid ingress protection (7 or 8 for water). Every iPhone from the iPhone 7 onwards carries at least an IP67 rating; current models reach IP68.

  • IP67: tested to survive submersion in 1 metre of fresh water for 30 minutes. iPhone 7 through iPhone XS carry this rating.
  • IP68: tested to survive submersion in fresh water at depths greater than 1 metre. Apple's specific claims vary by model: iPhone 11 is rated to 2 metres for 30 minutes; iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 to 6 metres for 30 minutes; iPhone 16 Pro and later to 6 metres for 30 minutes.
  • Not covered by warranty: Apple explicitly states that liquid damage is not covered under the standard warranty or AppleCare (only AppleCare+ incident claims apply).
  • Rating degradation: IP ratings apply to new devices only. Apple's own support documentation notes that the resistance may decrease as a result of normal wear.

In practical terms, an iPhone 15 Pro dropped in a Dubai hotel pool at 1.5 metres depth for 5 seconds may survive with no damage if the seals are intact. The same phone after 18 months of use with a previous screen repair may suffer corrosion from that same event. The rating is a benchmark, not a guarantee.

iPhone water damage repair cost Dubai

Our pricing is tiered by the level of work required, established after free diagnosis. We do not charge for diagnosis, and we provide a written quote before any paid work begins. Apple does not offer water damage repair: their service is a flat-fee device replacement (depot swap), which costs the same as buying a refurbished unit and results in you losing your original device and its data.

Component replacementAED 350AED 800+
Logic board repairAED 400AED 900+
Data recovery (water)AED 500AED 1,500+

The ultrasonic clean at AED 249 covers full disassembly, bath cleaning, rinse, and low-temperature drying, plus a post-clean functional test. If component replacement is also needed, the component cost is quoted separately and added to the clean fee. You approve the full cost before work proceeds.

Data recovery for phones that will not power on at all is quoted individually after board inspection. NAND chip extraction and reader-based recovery is possible in many cases even when the logic board is not repairable, provided the storage chip itself has not been physically destroyed.

When is iPhone water damage beyond repair?

Most iPhones brought in within 24 hours of water exposure are recoverable. The cases where repair is not possible fall into three categories, and we will always tell you honestly before charging for any work.

  • Burned-out SoC or PMIC: if the Apple Silicon chip or the power management IC was shorted while the phone was charging in a wet state, the chip dies permanently. These are BGA components with hundreds of sub-0.2 mm solder balls; even board-level repair cannot replace them when the die itself is damaged.
  • Severe trace corrosion after delayed treatment: phones brought in after 72 hours or more in very high-salinity liquid (sea water) sometimes have so many open traces on the logic board that repair cost exceeds the device value. We give you a repair-vs-replace recommendation when this is the case.
  • Physical crush damage combined with water: a phone dropped on concrete, cracking the board, and then submerged has two separate damage modes. Board-crack repair is micro-soldering work at a different level from corrosion removal; combined cases are quoted higher.

Even in cases where the phone itself cannot be saved, data recovery from the NAND chip is often still possible. If your photos, messages, or business data matter more than the device, tell us: we will focus on data extraction first and give you a separate quote for that work.

Frequently asked questions

  • Even with the iPhone powered off, dissolved minerals and salts in the liquid continue to deposit on the logic board. Oxygen in the air oxidises the exposed copper traces, forming insulating oxide layers that break circuits. Every hour the board sits wet accelerates this corrosion. By morning a phone that still had a chance at recovery may have a board with dozens of open traces. This is why we ask customers to bring the phone in immediately rather than 'waiting to see if it dries out'.
