MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro M5 - 2026 Buyer's Guide
Air for everyone. Pro for some. Here's how to know which.

What MacBook Air does well
The 2025 MacBook Air with M5 covers the entire computing life of 95% of people we sell to. Specifically:
- Web browsing, email, Slack, Teams, Zoom: for 18+ hours on a charge.
- 1080p and 4K video playback (no fan, silent).
- Photoshop, Lightroom, Figma: smooth on the M5 for everything except 100MP+ files.
- Xcode for iOS apps under ~30k lines (builds in under 30 seconds).
- Light Logic Pro / GarageBand work (8–16 tracks).
- Microsoft Office, accounting software, Notion: all native.
- 3.3 lbs / 1.5 kg: fits in any bag.
What MacBook Pro does that Air doesn't
- Active cooling: sustained heavy loads (Final Cut export, ML training) without thermal throttling.
- Mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display: 1,000 nits sustained, 1,600 peak, true HDR.
- ProMotion 120Hz: smoother scrolling, better for animation work.
- HDMI + SD card slot + MagSafe + 3 Thunderbolt ports: Air has 2 TB ports total.
- Studio-quality 6-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers.
- 1080p webcam + Centre Stage (Air has the same camera now too, used to be a Pro advantage).
- Up to 128GB unified memory (M5 Max): Air maxes at 32GB.
- Up to 8TB SSD: Air maxes at 2TB.
M5 vs M5 Pro vs M5 Max: chip tiers explained
| Chip | Found in | CPU / GPU cores | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| M5 | MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 14 (base) | 10 / 10 | Casual + most pro work |
| M5 Pro | MacBook Pro 14 (mid), MacBook Pro 16 (base) | 12 / 16 | 4K video, dev work |
| M5 Max | MacBook Pro 14/16 (top), Mac Studio | 16 / 40 | 8K video, ML training |
| M5 Ultra | Mac Studio (top), Mac Pro | 24 / 76 | Workstation only |
Practical rule: if you don't know which chip you need, you need M5 (base). The Pro and Max chips serve specific paid workflows; if you have one, you already know.
Display difference: Air = LCD, Pro = mini-LED
The Air uses a 13.6″ or 15.3″ Liquid Retina LCD: 500 nits, 60Hz, P3 colour. Excellent for office work, perfectly fine for casual photo editing.
The Pro uses a 14.2″ or 16.2″ Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED: 1,000 nits sustained, 1,600 nits HDR peak, ProMotion 120Hz, P3 colour. Noticeably better for HDR video grading, photography in bright environments, and animation work.
Side-by-side test: in our workshop we put both displays next to each other playing the same Dolby Vision trailer. Pro's blacks are deeper, highlights brighter, motion smoother. Air's display is "good"; Pro's is "great". For Netflix and email, the difference isn't worth the Pro premium.
Speaker difference
Air: 4-speaker system, decent stereo. Pro: 6-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers, spatial audio. The Pro's speakers are genuinely the best in any laptop on the market, close to a small Bluetooth speaker. The Air's are "fine for a laptop".
Repair cost difference
| Repair | Air M5 (13/15) | Pro M5 14 (base) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen replacement | Price on request | Price on request | Pro = mini-LED, more expensive panel |
| Battery replacement | Price on request | Price on request | Pro = larger 72.4 Wh cell |
| Top-case keyboard | Price on request | Price on request | Pro = additional Touch ID + larger trackpad |
| Logic board (component) | Price on request | Price on request | Pro = more complex board |
| Liquid damage clean | Price on request | Price on request | Same process, more components on Pro |
Verdict on repair: Air is roughly 30–35% cheaper to repair across the board. Over 4 years of ownership with one major repair, that difference is small compared to the purchase price gap between the two. Message us on WhatsApp for today's exact repair price on your model.
Buy used? M1 and M2 are still excellent
We service M1 MacBook Airs (2020) every week and they still feel fast in 2026. The M-series transition was a generational leap. Used M1/M2 Airs are the best value in computing right now:
| Model | Year | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air M1 8GB/256GB | 2020 | Price on request | Battery may need replacement |
| MacBook Air M2 8GB/256GB | 2022 | Price on request | Sweet spot for value |
| MacBook Air M2 16GB/512GB | 2022 | Price on request | Excellent value pick on a tighter budget |
| MacBook Air M3 16GB/512GB | 2024 | Price on request | Vs new M5, close call |

Verdict by user
- Student: Air M5 13″ 16GB. Or a used M2 Air 16GB, even better value.
- Designer (Figma, Photoshop): Air M5 15″ 24GB. Big screen, no fan noise.
- Developer (web, mobile, occasional Xcode): Air M5 16GB or Pro M5 base. Toss-up: Pro wins on screen, Air on weight.
- Developer (heavy Xcode, Docker, K8s): Pro M5 24GB. The active cooling matters.
- Video editor (4K): Pro M5 Pro 24GB minimum.
- Business / executive: Air M5 13″: light, silent, all-day battery.
- Casual home user: Used M1 or M2 Air. Big savings for the same daily experience.

Frequently asked questions
- Yes for 95% of pro work: Photoshop, Figma, Lightroom, web dev, light video. The fan-less design means it throttles after 8–10 minutes of sustained heavy load (Final Cut export, Xcode build). For burst workloads, Air = Pro performance.
- Yes: M3/M4/M5 Air supports two external displays (one with lid open, two with lid closed). Pro supports up to four external displays (M5 Pro chip) or six (M5 Max).
- If you use it as a desktop replacement at home, yes, the screen real estate is meaningful. If it lives in a bag and gets used at coffee shops, no, the 13″ is much more portable for the same chip.
- If the price gap between an Apple-refurbished M3 Air and a new M5 Air is small, buy the M5: the warranty of up to 12 months, the latest chip, and Wi-Fi 7 are worth it. If a third-party M3 is meaningfully cheaper, the M3 wins on value.
- Realistically 6–8 years of useful life. Apple supports macOS for ~7 years. The battery will typically need replacement around year 4. The M-series transition gave Air longevity that older Intel Airs didn't have.
- Only if you do colour-critical work, HDR video grading, or animation. For everyone else, the Air's display is excellent and the price difference goes further on RAM, SSD, or AppleCare+.
