Why does MacBook Pro M3 battery drain when not in use?
The M3 MacBook Pro (late 2023) was launched with Sonoma 14.0. Several Sonoma 14.0 and 14.1 bugs caused the M3 to use significantly more power during sleep than expected:
- backgroundtaskmanagerd: a Sonoma process responsible for scheduling background app updates. On M3 in Sonoma 14.0-14.1, this process repeatedly woke the machine from deep sleep to check for updates, preventing the M3 from reaching its lowest power sleep state. Drain of 15-30% overnight was commonly reported. Fixed in Sonoma 14.2
- Power Nap: macOS uses Power Nap to sync iCloud, check email, and update calendars during sleep. On M3, Power Nap is more aggressive than on M2, performing more background work per sleep session
- DarkWake: the M3 wakes briefly from sleep to handle notifications, push email, and Find My tracking. Each DarkWake consumes a small amount of power. On some UAE ISP routers with aggressive DHCP lease times, the M3 wakes frequently to renew its IP address
- Battery cell degradation: on M3 machines now 1.5-2 years old, degraded battery capacity means that even normal standby drain (1-2% per hour) represents a larger share of remaining usable capacity
Step 1: How do I check what is draining MacBook Pro M3 battery during sleep?
- Open Terminal and run:
pmset -g log | grep -i "sleep": this shows sleep and wake events with timestamps. If the M3 woke repeatedly every 30-60 minutes overnight, something prevented deep sleep - Run:
pmset -g assertions: this shows any active power assertions preventing sleep. A process holding a "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep" assertion is the drain source - Run:
log show --predicate 'subsystem == "com.apple.powerd"' --last 12h | grep "DarkWake": counts DarkWake events in the last 12 hours. More than 10 per hour indicates abnormal wake frequency
Step 2: How do I fix the backgroundtaskmanagerd battery drain on MacBook Pro M3?
- Update to Sonoma 14.2 or later: Apple's fix for the backgroundtaskmanagerd wake regression. System Settings, General, Software Update. The fix specifically reduces the frequency of background task checks during sleep on M3
- If already on 14.2+: the backgroundtaskmanagerd is no longer the primary cause. Move to Step 3 to check Power Nap and wake settings
- Manual temporary fix: run
sudo launchctl bootout system /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backgroundtaskmanagerd.plistin Terminal to disable the daemon until next restart. This is not a permanent fix. It confirms if backgroundtaskmanagerd is the drain source on older Sonoma versions
Step 3: How do I stop MacBook Pro M3 Power Nap from draining battery?
- Disable Power Nap on battery: System Settings, Battery, Options, uncheck "Enable Power Nap while on battery power". This is the single most effective setting for reducing overnight battery drain on M3
- Disable Wake for network access: System Settings, Battery, Options, uncheck "Wake for network access". This prevents the M3 from waking when other devices on the network attempt to connect to it
- Static IP address: if your UAE router has a short DHCP lease (30 minutes or less on some e& and du supplied routers), the M3 wakes to renew its IP repeatedly. Set a static IP in System Settings, Network, Wi-Fi, Details, TCP/IP, Configure IPv4: Manually to eliminate this wake source
Step 4: How do I check if MacBook Pro M3 battery needs replacing?
- System Settings, Battery, Battery Health: check Maximum Capacity and Condition
- Hold Option, click Apple menu, System Information, Power: shows exact cycle count
- M3 machines purchased in late 2023 (UAE launch) are now 1.5-2 years old. At 1 charge per day in Dubai, that is 550-730 cycles. The M3 battery is Apple-rated for 1,000 cycles to 80%. Still within specification but approaching the period where Dubai heat accelerates degradation
Does Dubai heat increase MacBook Pro M3 standby battery drain?
- Lithium battery self-discharge rate increases with temperature. At 20°C, the M3 battery loses approximately 0.1-0.2% per hour in standby. At 35°C (desk near a Dubai window), this increases to 0.3-0.5% per hour, a meaningful difference over 8+ hours
- In Dubai, keeping the M3 closed in a bag in a warm car accelerates self-discharge. The battery inside the bag can reach 45-50°C in summer, causing 2-4% per hour self-discharge even when fully asleep
- macOS thermal management during high ambient temperatures also wakes the M3 more frequently to check system status, increasing DarkWake frequency
