MacBook Pro M4 external monitor not being detected is one of the most reported issues on Apple Community since the M4's launch. Most cases trace to outdated Thunderbolt 5 dock firmware, display cable mismatches, or the M4 Pro's two-display limit being exceeded. Free diagnosis in Dubai. Port repair from AED 350.

Why does MacBook Pro M4 not detect an external monitor?

The M4 introduced Thunderbolt 5 (120Gbps) on all ports for the first time, replacing Thunderbolt 4 on previous models. Apple Community shows four distinct causes for display detection failures on M4:

  1. TB5 dock firmware not updated: docks designed for TB4 need a firmware update to negotiate TB5 bandwidth correctly. Without it, the dock connects at TB3 speeds and may fail to enumerate the display
  2. Wrong cable: a USB-C cable (even a USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable) cannot carry a 4K 60Hz signal reliably. Thunderbolt 5 requires a TB5-certified cable to fully utilise the port
  3. Display limit exceeded: M4 Pro supports 2 external displays. M4 Max supports 4. Connecting a third display to M4 Pro will not be detected without a DisplayLink adapter
  4. macOS Sequoia display bug: early Sequoia 15.0 and 15.1 had a display detection regression on M4 units, fixed in 15.2

Step 1: How do I fix MacBook Pro M4 external monitor not detected via dock?

Thunderbolt 5 dock firmware is the first thing to check. Even premium docks from CalDigit, OWC, Belkin, and Anker shipped with firmware written before TB5 spec was finalised. Updates were released throughout 2024-2025:

  • CalDigit TS4: download CalDigit's firmware updater app, connect the dock, run the update. Takes 3 minutes
  • OWC Thunderbolt 5 Hub: firmware update available in OWC's menu bar utility
  • Belkin Connect Pro TB5: firmware in the Belkin firmware updater app
  • Anker TB5 dock: firmware via Anker's Windows/Mac updater utility

After updating dock firmware: unplug the dock from the M4, wait 10 seconds, reconnect. The display should enumerate within 5 seconds. If it still fails, connect the monitor directly to the M4 (no dock) with a TB5 cable to isolate whether the dock or the port is the issue.

Step 2: How many external displays does MacBook Pro M4 support?

MacBook Pro M4 external display support
ModelMax external displaysNotes
MacBook Pro M4 (base)2 externalVia TB5 ports or HDMI (16-inch only)
MacBook Pro M4 Pro2 externalThird display needs DisplayLink USB adapter
MacBook Pro M4 Max4 externalVia TB5 + HDMI combination

If you are on M4 Pro and want a third external display: install DisplayLink Manager (free from displaylink.com), then connect the third monitor via a DisplayLink USB-C adapter. macOS treats it as a USB display independent of the GPU display engine.

Step 3: How do I force MacBook Pro M4 to detect a display?

  • System Settings, Displays, hold the Option key, click "Detect Displays". This forces the M4 to re-read every connected monitor's EDID information and re-enumerate display outputs
  • If the monitor appears but shows wrong resolution: in System Settings, Displays, select the monitor, click "Resolution", choose "Show all resolutions" and select the native resolution manually
  • Power cycle the monitor: turn the external display off and back on while connected. Some monitors send EDID only at power-on and the M4 may have missed it
  • Try a different TB5 port on the M4 (there are three TB5 ports on the 14-inch and three plus HDMI on the 16-inch). One port being faulty affects only that port

Step 4: Does cable type affect MacBook Pro M4 external monitor detection?

  • Thunderbolt 5 cable: 120Gbps, supports 8K 60Hz. Required for full M4 TB5 bandwidth. Identified by a TB5 logo (lightning bolt with 5) on the cable or packaging
  • Thunderbolt 4 cable: 40Gbps, supports 4K 60Hz or dual 4K 30Hz. Works with most monitors but does not unlock TB5 bandwidth
  • USB 3.2 cable: supports display output but caps at 4K 30Hz and causes intermittent detection failures at 4K 60Hz and above
  • USB 2.0 cable: will not carry video signal at all. A MacBook Pro M4 that shows no display with a particular cable often has the cable at fault, not the port

Does Dubai heat affect MacBook Pro M4 Thunderbolt port performance?

The Thunderbolt 5 controller on the M4 runs warmer under multi-display load than previous TB4 controllers. In Dubai summer ambient temperatures, the TB5 controller reaches thermal limits faster, which can cause intermittent display drops in a warm office.

  • If displays drop in the afternoon but are stable in the morning, heat is a factor. Ensure AC airflow reaches the M4 MacBook Pro directly
  • Clean intake vents every 6 months in Dubai. Fine desert dust reduces airflow to the TB5 controller heat sink and accelerates thermal throttling of the port controller

Frequently asked questions

  • The most common cause is outdated Thunderbolt 5 dock firmware. Download the latest firmware from your dock manufacturer (CalDigit, OWC, Belkin, Anker). After updating, unplug and replug the dock. Also verify you are using a Thunderbolt 5 certified cable, not a USB-C cable, USB cables cannot carry full 4K 60Hz through a TB5 dock.
