Migrating Data from Old MacBook to New MacBook Without iCloud
You don't need iCloud to move everything from your old MacBook to a new one. Migration Assistant does it all over a cable, apps, settings, passwords and files, in one step.

Method 1: Migration Assistant over a cable (recommended)
Migration Assistant is Apple's built-in tool for moving everything, user accounts, apps, settings, passwords and files, from one Mac to another. Using a direct cable connection is faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi.
- Connect both Macs with a USB-C to USB-C or Thunderbolt cable.
- On the new Mac, open Migration Assistant (Applications → Utilities → Migration Assistant).
- Choose "From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk" → Continue.
- On the old Mac, open Migration Assistant and select "To another Mac".
- A code will appear on the new Mac, confirm it matches on the old Mac.
- Select what to transfer: User Account, Applications, Other Files and Folders, Settings.
- Click Continue and wait. Transfer time depends on data size, typically 30 min to 3 hours over Thunderbolt.
What gets transferred: your entire user account (Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Photos library, Mail, Contacts, Calendar), most applications, system preferences, Wi-Fi passwords, browser bookmarks, and Keychain passwords.
What doesn't transfer automatically: apps from outside the App Store may need re-activation. Adobe CC, Microsoft 365 and similar subscription apps usually need a new sign-in.
Method 2: Time Machine backup on an external drive
If you have a Time Machine backup on an external SSD or HDD, you can restore it directly to the new MacBook during setup or via Migration Assistant.
- Connect the external drive with the Time Machine backup to the new Mac.
- Open Migration Assistant → "From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk".
- Select the Time Machine backup and choose which backup point to restore from.
- Select your user account and any other data, then click Continue.
This method works even if your old MacBook is broken or no longer accessible, as long as you have a recent backup. The process is identical to the direct cable method once you select the source.
Method 3: Manual copy via external drive or AirDrop
For a selective transfer, just specific folders, not a full migration, you can copy files manually:
- External drive: Copy your Documents, Desktop, Downloads, and any other folders you want to an external SSD or USB drive, then copy them to the new Mac.
- AirDrop: Works well for small amounts of data, drag files to AirDrop in Finder. Slow and impractical for large transfers.
- Shared folder over the same Wi-Fi: On the old Mac, System Settings → General → Sharing → enable File Sharing. On the new Mac, open Finder → Network → select the old Mac.
Limitation: Manual copy moves files only, not apps, preferences, passwords, or system settings. For a complete migration, Method 1 (Migration Assistant) is almost always better.
Tips to make migration smoother
- Keep both Macs plugged in during migration, don't let either run on battery.
- Update the old Mac to the latest macOS it supports before migrating. Migration Assistant works best between similar macOS versions.
- Check available space on the new Mac first, you need at least as much free space as the data you're migrating.
- Note your app licences before you start. Software like Lightroom, Logic Pro and Sketch may need re-authentication on the new machine.

Frequently asked questions
- Yes. Migration Assistant over a USB-C or Thunderbolt cable transfers your entire user account, apps, settings, passwords, files, and browser data, without iCloud. It's faster and more complete than any iCloud-based transfer.
- Over a Thunderbolt cable, Migration Assistant typically takes 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on how much data you have. Over Wi-Fi it can take 4–10 hours or more for large libraries. Use a cable for the fastest, most reliable transfer.
- A USB-C to USB-C cable works on all modern MacBooks (2016+). For the fastest transfer on MacBook Pro models, use a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 cable, these are physically identical to USB-C but negotiate a faster connection (up to 40 Gb/s vs 10 Gb/s).
- Yes. App Store apps migrate completely. Third-party apps (Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) migrate their files but usually need you to sign in again on the new Mac to reactivate their licences. Make a note of your licence keys and Adobe/Microsoft credentials before you start.
- If you have a Time Machine backup, yes, restore from that backup to the new Mac using Migration Assistant. If you don't have a backup and the old Mac won't boot, bring it to us: we can recover data from a non-booting MacBook and migrate it to your new machine.
