Photoshop / Illustrator / InDesign - MacBook Air M4 enough

The Adobe trio (PS, AI, ID) runs comfortably on a MacBook Air M4 16GB. We tested it with our standard creative load: 3 Photoshop documents (each 200MB), Illustrator open with a 50-artboard file, InDesign with a 60-page magazine. RAM pressure stayed under 12GB. The Air M4 throttles slightly on 30+ minute filter renders but recovers quickly.

  • RAM: 16GB minimum. 24GB if you regularly work with files above 500MB.
  • Storage: 512GB minimum (working files + scratch + apps).
  • Display: Air's 500-nit P3 LCD is excellent for design work.
  • Verdict: The Air saves you a meaningful chunk over the Pro - spend the savings on a Wacom + Studio Display.

Premiere / Final Cut - MacBook Pro 14″ M4 minimum

For video editing beyond short social cuts, you need active cooling. Air M4 will throttle on a 10-minute 4K timeline export. The MacBook Pro 14″ M4 base holds full chip speed indefinitely.

  • 1080p editing: Pro 14 M4 base 16GB sufficient.
  • 4K H.264 / HEVC editing: Pro 14 M4 base 24GB recommended config.
  • 4K ProRes / multi-cam: Pro 14 M4 Pro 24GB - 12 CPU + 16 GPU cores.
  • 4K with heavy effects (Magic Mask, AI): Pro 14 M4 Max 36GB+.
  • Storage: 1TB internal + 4TB Thunderbolt SSD for project libraries.
  • Display: XDR mini-LED is a real upgrade for HDR grading vs Air.

DaVinci Resolve 4K - Mac Studio M4 Max territory

DaVinci Resolve uses the GPU heavily for colour grading and Fusion compositing. The MacBook Pro 14 M4 Max handles it, but for sustained colour grading sessions Mac Studio wins on three counts:

  • Cooler running - no fan-curve compromises.
  • More port options - 6× TB5 + 10Gb Ethernet for SAN workflows.
  • Future RAM headroom - Mac Studio M4 Max can be configured to 128GB; MacBook Pro Max maxes at 64GB.
  • Cheaper for the same chip - the Mac Studio M4 Max base undercuts the Pro 14 M4 Max for similar specs.

8K video - Mac Studio M3 Ultra (or wait for M5 Ultra)

For 8K timelines (RED, ARRI, Sony VENICE, Blackmagic 12K), only M3 Ultra and (when released late 2026) M5 Ultra make sense. The chip needs 24-core CPU and 76-core GPU minimum to scrub 8K ProRes in real-time.

  • Mac Studio M3 Ultra 96GB: the entry point for real-time 8K.
  • Mac Studio M3 Ultra 192GB: ML, multi-cam 8K, Resolve neural engine effects.
  • Storage: Internal 2-4TB + 12-bay Promise Pegasus for media. The internal 8TB upgrade is pricey - buy Pegasus instead.

Audio production (Logic Pro) - MacBook Pro M4 Pro

Logic Pro and Pro Tools are surprisingly RAM-hungry once you load orchestral sample libraries (Spitfire BBC, Native Instruments Komplete). The M4 Pro 24GB is the sweet spot.

  • Singer-songwriter / podcast: MacBook Air M4 16GB sufficient.
  • Mid-size project (30 tracks, AU plugins): MacBook Pro M4 16GB.
  • Orchestral / large session (100+ tracks): MacBook Pro M4 Pro 24GB.
  • Film scoring / mixing (200+ tracks + sample libraries): Mac Studio M4 Max 64GB or Ultra.
  • Audio interface: All work via USB-C; no Thunderbolt-specific bottlenecks for audio.

3D rendering (Cinema 4D, Blender, Octane) - Mac Studio Ultra

3D rendering is GPU-bound, so more GPU cores = linearly faster renders. Mac Studio Ultra (76 GPU cores) renders Blender Cycles scenes ~2× faster than M4 Max 40 GPU cores.

  • Cinema 4D viewport / animation work: M4 Max 64GB sufficient.
  • Blender Cycles GPU rendering: M3 Ultra 76-core GPU is the practical choice.
  • Octane / Redshift: Both have native Apple Silicon paths now (2025); M3 Ultra recommended.
  • Reality Composer Pro / visionOS development: M4 Max minimum, Ultra preferred.
  • RAM: 64GB minimum for working scenes, 128GB for film-grade complexity.

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes - Air M4 16GB handles real client work daily for retouchers we know in Dubai. The Air throttles on 30+ minute Neural Filter renders but is fine for layered comps under 500MB. The display is colour-accurate. Save the money.
