Why do iPad screens crack or fail?

iPad screens fail for three distinct reasons, and each points to a different repair. Understanding the cause before booking a repair saves both time and money.

  • Impact damage: The most common cause. A drop onto a hard surface shatters the glass and often the LCD layer underneath simultaneously. The thin aluminium chassis of the iPad Air M3 and the ultra-thin iPad Pro M4 offer less shock absorption than older, thicker models.
  • Pressure cracks: These appear without a drop. A heavy object placed on the iPad in a bag, or sitting on it accidentally, applies uneven pressure that fractures the glass from the inside out. The crack pattern tends to radiate from the point of maximum pressure rather than from an edge.
  • LCD or digitiser failure without physical damage: The backlight can fail due to a faulty backlight driver IC on the logic board, or the display flex cable connector can work loose over years of use. These present as sudden blackouts, flickering, or partial loss of brightness with no cracked glass.

Dubai's daily temperature swings also contribute. Repeated expansion and contraction of the aluminium frame and glass panel as devices move between air-conditioned interiors and outdoor heat (often a 20°C differential) fatigues the adhesive bonding the glass to the frame. Over 2-3 years this can cause corner-lift and micro-cracks without any single drop event.

In the workshop, our first step on any iPad is to determine whether the fault is in the screen assembly (glass plus digitiser plus LCD or OLED panel) or in the board components driving the display. The diagnosis is free and takes around 15 minutes.

Step 1: Is it the digitiser, LCD, or full assembly?

The iPad screen is made of three layers that can fail independently, each with a different repair cost. Knowing which layer is broken helps you understand the quote.

  1. Glass digitiser: The outermost layer captures touch input. A cracked digitiser alone means the screen may display perfectly but have dead touch zones. On most iPad models the digitiser is bonded to the LCD, so it is almost always replaced as part of a full display assembly rather than separately.
  2. LCD panel: Sits behind the digitiser. LCD damage shows as coloured bleed (usually pink, purple, or black ink-like spread from the crack point), horizontal or vertical lines, or a completely black screen with the backlight still on. Once the LCD is cracked, a full display assembly replacement is required.
  3. OLED panel (iPad Pro M4 / M5): The iPad Pro M4 and M5 use a Tandem OLED display, two OLED layers stacked for brightness. OLED damage can show as green tint, dead pixels, or permanent burn-in from static images. OLED panels cost significantly more to replace than LCD.

On standard iPads (9th, 10th, 11th generation) and iPad Air models, the glass and LCD are sold as a bonded unit, so the repair price covers both regardless of which layer broke. On iPad Pro models, the OLED panel is the dominant cost driver.

A flex cable connecting the display assembly to the logic board can also cause display faults. This presents identically to a broken LCD but costs far less to fix, as only the cable needs replacing rather than the full panel. Our diagnosis step checks the cable condition before ordering a panel.

Step 2: Can I use an iPad with a cracked screen?

A lightly cracked iPad with full touch response and no LCD bleed can be used for short periods, but continued use accelerates the damage in several ways specific to Dubai's environment.

The glass acts as a seal keeping humidity and dust out of the display assembly. A crack breaks that seal. In Dubai, outdoor humidity regularly exceeds 80% in summer mornings and during winter fog events. Each time the iPad moves from a cool indoor environment to humid outdoor air, moisture is drawn into the crack. Within a few days of use, the LCD layer beneath can develop bleed patterns that spread from the crack outward, turning a simple glass repair into a full assembly replacement at higher cost.

Structurally, a cracked screen also means the iPad has lost its IP rating for water resistance. The iPad Air M3 and iPad 10th generation carry IP68 and IP52 ratings respectively. A cracked screen invalidates those ratings entirely. Any contact with rain or poolside splashing with a cracked screen carries the same risk as an older unrated iPad.

Step 3: How do I test if touch still works?

Before booking a repair, run these quick tests to help narrow down the fault and give our technicians useful information when you WhatsApp for a quote.

  1. Draw a diagonal line across the full screen: Open Notes, select a pen, and drag slowly from corner to corner. Any dead zone will show as a gap in the line. Note where the gap is relative to the crack.
  2. Test all four edges: Scroll from the very edge of the screen. Edge sensors are often the first to fail after a corner impact.
  3. Test the Apple Pencil (if you have one): Pencil input uses a separate digitiser path on iPad Pro models. If the Pencil works but finger touch does not, the fault is in the capacitive digitiser layer, not the Pencil digitiser. If both fail, the touch controller IC on the board may be the issue rather than the screen itself.
  4. Check for screen lift: Run a fingernail around the perimeter of the glass. Any lift or separation from the aluminium frame indicates the adhesive bond has failed, which is a separate repair from a cracked screen.

Take a screenshot before bringing the iPad in. The screenshot captures exactly what the GPU is rendering, independent of the display. If the screenshot looks normal but the screen does not, the fault is in the display assembly or its connection. If the screenshot also shows artefacts, the GPU or display controller on the board is involved.

Step 4: Can I connect an external display temporarily?

iPad Pro models with Thunderbolt (M1 and later) and iPad Air M2 and M3 support external display output via USB-C. If your iPad screen is damaged but the internal board is working, you can connect a monitor or TV using a USB-C to HDMI adapter and continue working while the repair is booked.

iPad Pro M4 and M5 running iPadOS 17 or later support Stage Manager in extended display mode, meaning the external monitor becomes a separate workspace rather than a mirror of the iPad screen. This allows continued productivity even with a fully black or shattered internal display, provided the USB-C port itself is undamaged.

Standard iPad models (10th, 11th gen) also support external display output via USB-C in mirror mode only. The iPad mini 6 uses Lightning and does not support external display output natively without an adapter that adds latency. iPad mini 7 switched to USB-C and supports display output in the same way as the iPad Air.

Does Dubai heat cause iPad screen delamination?

Yes. Display delamination, where the glass layer separates from the LCD or OLED panel beneath, is noticeably more common in Dubai than in cooler climates. The cause is the adhesive (optically clear adhesive, OCA) that bonds the glass to the panel softening under sustained temperatures above 35°C.

iPad left in a car, on a sunny balcony, or near an outdoor air conditioning unit outlet can reach surface temperatures of 50-60°C within minutes. At these temperatures the OCA layer loses cohesion. The result is a visible air gap between the glass and the LCD that looks like a frosted or white patch, often in a corner. This is delamination. Unlike a crack, it is not caused by impact and the glass may appear perfectly intact. The fix is a display assembly replacement in most cases, as re-bonding delaminated assemblies requires a clean room and optical bonding equipment that exceeds the cost of a new panel.

Delamination from heat is not covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare. Apple categorises it as environmental damage. It is also not covered by most UAE consumer electronics insurance policies unless the policy explicitly covers heat damage. Preventing it is straightforward: never leave an iPad in a parked car in Dubai, and avoid direct sunlight exposure for more than 10-15 minutes.

iPad Pro OLED vs Air LCD: repair cost difference

The iPad Pro M4 and M5 introduced Tandem OLED displays, two organic LED panels stacked behind a single piece of glass to achieve the brightness of LED-backlit LCD with the contrast of OLED. This architecture is significantly more expensive to replace than the standard LCD panels used in all other iPad models.

The cost difference breaks down into three components. The panel cost itself is roughly 2.5 to 3 times higher for OLED than for a comparable size LCD. The bonding process is more complex because OLED panels are more fragile during handling and require a controlled environment during reassembly to avoid pressure damage to the organic layers. Finally, OLED panels require a calibration step after replacement to set the white point and colour profile, adding to labour time.

For the iPad Air M2 and M3, the LCD panel repair cost is AED 500 for the 11-inch model. The equivalent iPad Pro 11-inch M4 with OLED is AED 900, nearly double. On the 13-inch format, the iPad Air LCD repair sits at approximately AED 600 while the iPad Pro 13-inch M4 OLED reaches AED 1,200. If you are deciding between iPad Air and iPad Pro for a child or a high-use work device, the screen repair cost difference is a meaningful factor over a 5-year ownership period.

When is the GPU or board the real fault?

Not every display fault is a screen fault. A small percentage of iPads that look like they have a broken screen actually have a logic board problem driving the display. Identifying this before ordering a panel saves the cost of an unnecessary screen replacement.

  • Flickering after a software update: If the flickering started immediately after an iPadOS update and there was no physical damage, the display driver or GPU firmware is likely the cause. A screen replacement will not fix this.
  • Green tint on OLED (iPad Pro M4): A persistent green tint across the full panel can indicate a failing OLED driver IC on the logic board rather than the panel itself. Our technicians test by connecting a known-good display before ordering parts.
  • Touch not working after a board repair: If touch stopped working following another repair (battery swap, charging port fix), a flex cable was likely disturbed or the touch controller on the board was damaged during the previous repair. A screen replacement will not fix this.
  • Black screen with backlight visible: Hold the iPad under a bright light at an angle. If you can faintly see the interface, the LCD is likely intact but the backlight driver or backlight fuse on the board has failed. This is a board-level repair costing AED 300-500, not a screen replacement.

Our diagnostic process specifically checks for these board-level causes before any screen replacement is recommended. We connect the display assembly to a test jig to isolate whether the fault is in the panel or the board. If the board is at fault, we quote for that repair instead, which is typically less expensive than a full display assembly replacement.

In cases where both the screen and a board component are damaged (common in high-impact drops), we provide a combined quote covering both repairs and confirm the total before starting any work.

Frequently asked questions

  • A cracked glass panel allows humidity to seep into the LCD or digitiser layer. Dubai's air conditioning cycles between cool indoor air and hot humid outdoor air, which drives condensation into any micro-crack. Overnight on standby, without the heat of the backlight evaporating moisture, the ingress worsens. What was a hairline crack can produce a dead touch zone or spreading LCD bleed by morning. The fix is replacing the display assembly before water damage reaches the logic board.
