MacBook Pro Butterfly Keyboard Failing in Dubai? Here is Why and How to Fix It

Apple's butterfly keyboard (2016-2019 Intel MacBook Pro) was the company's most publicly criticised hardware design. A single grain of dust under a key switch could render keys non-functional. Apple ran a free Keyboard Service Program for eligible models. In Dubai, where fine desert dust is ever-present, butterfly keyboards failed faster than anywhere. Keyboard repair costs AED 300-500 in Dubai.

Why does the MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard fail: the design defect

Apple's butterfly mechanism (introduced 2016) used a single-piece aluminium butterfly-shaped pivot instead of the traditional scissor mechanism. The design was thinner but fundamentally more fragile:

  • Zero debris tolerance: the butterfly pivot has essentially no gap between the keycap and the underlying mechanism. A single grain of fine debris, sand, crumb, or desert dust, wedged under the pivot arm causes the key to stick or stop registering entirely. Scissor keyboards have a much larger gap and are far more tolerant of debris
  • Brittle pivot arms: the aluminium butterfly arms are thin and can crack under normal typing pressure after 1-2 years of regular use. Once cracked, the key becomes either mushy or stuck permanently
  • No user-accessible repair: unlike scissor keycaps which pop off with a spudger for cleaning, butterfly keycaps often broke the mechanism when removed. Apple acknowledged the defect and ran a global Keyboard Service Program from 2018-2021 covering 2016-2019 models

Apple replaced butterfly mechanism with scissor (Magic Keyboard) starting with the Intel 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, and all M1 (2020) and later models use scissor.

Step 1: How do I identify butterfly vs scissor keyboard on Intel MacBook Pro?

  • Butterfly keyboard models: MacBook Pro 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 13-inch and 15-inch (except 2019 16-inch)
  • Scissor keyboard models: MacBook Pro 2019 16-inch, and all 2020 and later models (M1 onward)
  • Visual test: butterfly keyboards feel nearly flat with almost no key travel (0.55mm). Scissor keyboards have noticeably more key travel (1mm+)
  • Check model: Apple menu, About This Mac. Year 2016-2019 on 13 or 15-inch = butterfly. Year 2019 on 16-inch = scissor

Step 2: Compressed air fix for MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard stuck key

  • Shut down the MacBook Pro completely
  • Hold at approximately 75 degrees from horizontal (near-vertical, slightly tilted)
  • Use a can of compressed air (available at all computer shops in Dubai, Sharaf DG, Lulu, Carrefour). Use the tube attachment for directed airflow
  • Spray in short 1-2 second bursts across the stuck key from left to right, then rotate 90 degrees and spray again. Do this from multiple angles for 30 seconds total
  • Turn on and test the key. Repeat if needed. This works approximately 60-70% of the time for single-key dust contamination
  • Do not use a vacuum cleaner: the suction can pull the already-fragile butterfly pivot arm out of its housing

Step 3: Key removal and cleaning for butterfly keyboard

  • Only attempt if compressed air fails and the key is a standard key (not Space, Enter, or Shift, these have additional retention clips)
  • Use a thin plastic spudger or guitar pick at the TOP EDGE of the keycap only (not the bottom, the clip attaches at bottom and will break if you pry there)
  • Apply very light, even upward pressure along the top edge until the key pops free
  • Inspect the butterfly pivot arms for cracks. Cracked arms cannot be repaired. The keycap must be replaced or the top case replaced
  • Clean the area underneath with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) on a cotton swab. Allow to dry completely before reinstalling the key
  • If any part of the mechanism breaks during removal: stop. Top case replacement is now necessary

Step 4: Apple Keyboard Service Program eligibility check

  • Apple ran a free Keyboard Service Program covering 2016-2019 MacBook Pro models. The program ran from 2018 to approximately 2022
  • Check current eligibility: visit apple.com/support and search "MacBook Pro Keyboard Service Program". Enter your serial number. Even in 2026, some claims may still be processable depending on your purchase country warranty terms
  • UAE consumers may also have rights under UAE Consumer Protection Law for defective products. Contact Apple UAE (Apple Store Dubai Mall or DIFC) to discuss
  • If the program is expired for your machine: our Dubai workshop offers top case replacement at AED 300-500, which includes the keyboard, battery, and trackpad as one unit (same as Apple's approach but at lower cost)

Does Dubai dust make MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard fail faster?

  • Definitively yes. Dubai's desert environment means fine silica dust particles (2-10 micron diameter) are consistently present in indoor air, even in well-sealed offices. HVAC systems circulate this dust constantly
  • The butterfly mechanism's tolerance for debris is essentially zero. A standard Dubai office environment generates enough fine dust to contaminate a butterfly keyboard in weeks of use, compared to months in a European city
  • Dubai users who worked in areas near the desert (Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, IMPZ), in older buildings with less efficient AC, or near construction sites experienced butterfly failures significantly faster than the global average
  • Apple's silicone membrane (introduced on 2018 butterfly keyboard as a "fix") provided marginal improvement but did not solve the core design problem in high-dust environments

Which Intel MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard models are most affected?

ModelKeyboard generationDubai failure rate
MacBook Pro 2016 13/15-inch1st gen butterfly: worst design, no membraneVery high: most complaints on Apple Community
MacBook Pro 2017 13/15-inch2nd gen butterfly: minor pivot improvement, no membraneHigh: similar failure rate to 2016
MacBook Pro 2018 13/15-inch3rd gen butterfly: silicone membrane addedModerate: membrane helped but didn't solve problem
MacBook Pro 2019 13-inch4th gen butterfly: further membrane improvementLower, but still butterfly mechanism, still fails
MacBook Pro 2019 16-inchScissor (Magic Keyboard): design correctedVery low: scissor mechanism is robust

When does MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard need full top case replacement?

  • Multiple keys failing simultaneously: contamination throughout the keyboard deck
  • Any pivot arm cracked: single key replacement possible, but crack pattern usually spreads to adjacent keys
  • Key registers double-presses consistently: "keyboard doubling" that persists after cleaning
  • Spacebar or Enter key failure: these are the hardest butterfly keys to clean and the most expensive to replace individually due to multiple retention clips
  • Keys physically rocking or feeling different to adjacent keys: deformed pivot arms

Frequently asked questions

  • MacBook Pro 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 13-inch and 15-inch models. The 2019 16-inch switched back to scissor (Magic Keyboard) and is not affected. All M1 (2020) and later MacBook Pros use scissor keyboards. In Dubai's dusty environment, butterfly failures were reported faster and more severely than in European or North American cities.
