What makes the Intel Air keyboard different
The MacBook Air Intel 2018–2020 uses Apple's 3rd-generation butterfly keyboard with only 0.55 mm of key travel. The mechanism is a two-part plastic 'butterfly' wing that flattens when pressed. It is extremely sensitive to debris: a single crumb or dust particle under a key can cause it to stick, fail to register, or double-register. Dubai's fine desert sand is particularly damaging.
Unlike the Magic Keyboard on M1–M4 Air models, butterfly keys cannot be individually replaced. The key mechanism is integrated into the top-case keyboard backplate. If one key fails, the full top-case assembly — which includes the keyboard, trackpad, battery and aluminium deck — must be replaced. Apple acknowledged the butterfly keyboard failure issue with a free replacement programme covering 2018–2019 models, but this programme has ended. The 2020 Intel Air also uses a 3rd-generation butterfly keyboard (though slightly revised) but was not covered by the programme. If your Air was repaired under the programme and the issue has returned, you are out of warranty coverage — we repair same-day for AED 350.
Intel Air keyboards do not have Touch ID. The Touch ID sensor was not introduced to MacBook Air until the M1 (2020) model. This simplifies top-case replacement on Intel models — no Touch ID transfer is required. We install the new top-case with the existing battery and trackpad reconnected.
After top-case replacement, the keyboard backlight should be re-tested per key. We verify all 78 keys register correctly and the backlight is uniform before returning the machine. The repair includes a 15-day warranty on the replacement top-case assembly.

Single key not registering
A single piece of dust or debris under the butterfly mechanism causes the key to stop registering or register intermittently. The fix is top-case replacement — AED 350, same-day. Compressed air sometimes provides temporary relief but does not fix the underlying issue.
Key double-registering (types two letters)
Double-register happens when the butterfly clip deforms and both halves activate simultaneously. Very common after 4–6 years of use on Dubai Intel Airs. Top-case replacement resolves it permanently. AED 350.
Sticky key after coffee or liquid spill
Liquid on a butterfly keyboard dries under the mechanism and bonds the wings. Because butterfly keys cannot be removed individually, top-case replacement is required. If significant liquid reached the logic board, we check that too — free as part of diagnosis.
Key cap cracked or broken off
Butterfly key caps snap if forced sideways. Unlike scissor switch caps, butterfly caps cannot be sourced and re-clipped individually — the top-case must be replaced. AED 350 includes the full replacement.
Backlight dead on Intel Air
If the full backlight is dead (not just one zone), the backlight flex cable between the top-case and logic board has failed. New top-case includes a new backlight array. If the logic board connector is damaged, we address that separately.
All keys unresponsive after macOS update
Rare but reported after major macOS upgrades on Intel Air. Usually a SMC firmware issue rather than hardware. We test software reset first (SMC + PRAM). If reset does not restore function, the keyboard flex connector needs inspection.
