Apple Discontinued the Mac Pro - Your 2026 Alternatives
March 2026 - Apple killed the Mac Pro. Here's what to buy instead.
Apple Discontinued the Mac Pro - Your 2026 Alternatives?
Quick answer
Why Apple discontinued the Mac Pro
Apple shipped the last Mac Pro on 11 March 2026 - a 7-year run that started with the 2019 Intel tower and ended with the 2023 M2 Ultra refresh. Three reasons drove the decision:
- Volume: Mac Pro was always < 1% of Mac unit sales. Apple's own briefing called it "a workshop product, not a product line."
- Mac Studio caught up: The M3 Ultra in the Mac Studio matches or beats the M2 Ultra Mac Pro in 95% of benchmarks at AED 9,000 less.
- PCIe is dead on Apple Silicon: Apple Silicon's unified memory architecture cannot expose PCIe lanes to third-party GPUs. The Mac Pro's tower form factor became symbolic, not functional.
Mac Studio M3 Ultra - the new top Mac
Apple is positioning the Mac Studio M3 Ultra as the replacement. Spec-for-spec it does match:
| Spec | Mac Pro 2023 (discontinued) | Mac Studio M3 Ultra (current) |
|---|---|---|
| CPU cores | 24 (16P + 8E) | 32 (24P + 8E) |
| GPU cores | 76 | 80 |
| Max RAM | 192 GB | 256 GB |
| Max SSD | 8 TB | 16 TB |
| PCIe slots | 6 (PCIe 4.0) | 0 |
| Thunderbolt | 8× TB4 | 6× TB5 |
| Price (UAE base) | AED 27,999 (was) | AED 18,999 |
For audio production, video editing, 3D rendering, and ML training, the Mac Studio M3 Ultra is the better buy. It draws 480W vs the Mac Pro's 1,280W, runs silent, and fits on a desk shelf.
Mac Pro 2019 Intel - still the only Mac with PCIe (worth keeping)
If your workflow needs PCIe cards - RED Rocket, Avid Pro Tools HDX, AJA Kona, Decklink 8K, Afterburner, Magma chassis - the 2019 Intel Mac Pro is the only Mac that supports them. Not the 2023 M2 Ultra (PCIe slots present but Apple Silicon can't expose them to third-party drivers), not the Mac Studio. Period.
macOS Tahoe (26) still supports the 2019 Intel Mac Pro. Apple has committed to security updates through at least 2028. After that, you're on macOS Sequoia or earlier - fine for a sealed studio machine.
Used Mac Pro 2019 prices in Dubai (still high)
| Configuration | Asking range | Realistic sale price |
|---|---|---|
| 8-core Xeon W, 32GB, 256GB, 580X | AED 11,500-14,000 | AED 11,000 |
| 12-core, 96GB, 1TB, W5700X | AED 16,000-19,500 | AED 16,500 |
| 16-core, 192GB, 2TB, W6800X Duo | AED 22,000-28,000 | AED 22,500 |
| 28-core, 768GB, 4TB, W6900X Duo | AED 32,000-42,000 | AED 34,000 |
Prices have actually risen 8% since the discontinuation announcement - supply now finite, demand from PCIe-locked workflows steady.
Workflows that still need a Mac Pro alternative
- Pro Tools HDX (Avid): 256+ track sessions on PCIe DSP cards. No Mac Studio support.
- Broadcast video I/O (AJA, Blackmagic Decklink 8K): Some have TB3/TB5 boxes - many don't.
- RED workflows pre-V-Raptor: RED Rocket-X PCIe accelerators only run in 2019 Mac Pro.
- Scientific compute (CUDA legacy): Old NVIDIA cards via Mojave-era Mac Pros (cheap 2009-2012 cheese-graters still useful).
- 10GbE + multi-NVMe RAID studios: Sonnet Echo Express III chassis is one option, but native PCIe is more reliable.
External GPU options (limited on Apple Silicon)
Bad news for hopefuls: macOS 14 dropped eGPU support entirely on Apple Silicon. The 2019 Intel Mac Pro can still drive a Sonnet Breakaway with an AMD W6800 over Thunderbolt 3 - but it's slower than the internal MPX module and not officially supported by Apple in 2026.
Service availability for existing Mac Pro owners
Apple has confirmed parts availability for the 2019 Mac Pro through 2026-12-31. After that, Apple Stores will refuse repairs and Apple Self Service Repair will stop shipping kits. The 2023 M2 Ultra Mac Pro is supported through 2030.
We will continue servicing both indefinitely. We hold stock of CPU trays (2019), GPU MPX modules (W5700X, W6800X, W6900X), 1.4kW PSUs, fan modules, and Afterburner cards. We also do board-level repair on the 2023 M2 Ultra logic board where Apple would only sell a full replacement at AED 18,000+.
We service all Mac Pros - here's what we do
- 2008-2012 cheese-grater: PSU rebuilds, RAM riser fixes, GPU flashing, SSD adapters. AED 350-800.
- 2013 cylinder ("trash can"): GPU thermal repaste (mandatory at 8 years), fan rebuilds, dual D300/D500/D700 swap. AED 600-1,400.
- 2019 Intel tower: MPX module diagnostics, NAND-level SSD recovery (T2-locked), PSU swaps, lid sensor fixes. AED 500-2,200.
- 2023 M2 Ultra: Logic-board level repair, fan module replacement, port repair. AED 800-4,500.

Frequently asked questions
- Apple stopped accepting Mac Pro orders on 11 March 2026. Final units shipped through end-March 2026. The product page was removed from apple.com/ae on 1 April 2026.
- No public roadmap. Industry analysts (Gurman, Kuo) report no Mac Pro project in development as of April 2026. The Mac Studio M3 Ultra is positioned as the de-facto top Mac.
- Only if you don't need the PCIe slots. Used prices have risen 8% post-discontinuation and are likely to hold for 18-24 months as PCIe-dependent shops scramble.
- For 90% of workloads, yes - and at AED 9,000 less. The 5% of users who need PCIe (Pro Tools HDX, RED Rocket, Decklink 8K, Afterburner) still need the 2019 Mac Pro. There is no Apple Silicon replacement.
- Apple has not committed beyond macOS 26 (Tahoe). Best estimate: macOS 27 yes, macOS 28 unlikely. Security updates committed through 2028.
- Yes - to component level. Apple only sells full board swaps at AED 18,000+. We diagnose to the chip, replace specific power ICs or memory, and typically deliver in 5-10 working days at AED 2,500-4,500.
