iPad Air M4 vs iPad Pro M5 - 2026 Comparison?
Quick answer
Quick answer
Both iPads are excellent. The Pro is genuinely better - but only matters for ~20% of users. If you're a student, casual creator, note-taker, or general user, the Air M4 is the smarter buy. The AED 1,700 saved buys you AppleCare+ (AED 449), a Magic Keyboard (AED 1,049), and still leaves change.

iPad Air M4 strengths
- Cheaper: AED 1,700 less at 11″ base. That's a Magic Keyboard, Pencil Pro, AppleCare+, and screen protector - all included.
- M4 chip is plenty: Same chip as base iPad Pro from 2024. Handles Lightroom, LumaFusion 1080p/4K editing, Procreate at 16k canvas, all gaming. Apple Intelligence works fine on 8 GB RAM.
- Two sizes (11″ and 13″): 13″ Air is the cheapest big iPad you can buy.
- Lighter: 462 g vs 444 g - same league. Both are comfortable for one-handed reading.
- Apple Pencil Pro support: Full Pencil Pro (squeeze, barrel roll, haptic) - same as Pro.
iPad Pro M5 strengths
- Tandem OLED display: Two stacked OLED panels = true blacks, 1,600-nit HDR peak, 1,000-nit sustained. Genuinely the best display Apple has ever shipped on a portable. If you watch HDR video, edit photos, or stare at it 8 hrs/day, this matters.
- 120Hz ProMotion: Once you scroll iPadOS at 120Hz, going back to 60Hz feels broken. The single biggest "quality of life" difference.
- M5 chip + 12/16 GB RAM: 25% faster GPU, more RAM headroom. ProRes 4K editing in real time. 8K HEVC export ~30% faster than Air M4.
- Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4: 40 Gb/s vs 10 Gb/s. Drives a 6K external display, fast SSD scratch disks, ProRes capture from a Blackmagic camera.
- Face ID: Both portrait and landscape. Air still uses Touch ID in the power button.
- Better speakers: 4-speaker landscape audio. Noticeable for movies and music.
iPad for note-taking - Air enough
Pencil Pro support is identical. 60Hz vs 120Hz is barely perceptible at writing speed. Procreate and GoodNotes don't differentiate. Air wins on price. Save AED 1,700.
iPad for video editing - Pro better but not required
For LumaFusion or DaVinci Resolve at 1080p / 4K H.264, the Air M4 handles it without sweating. For ProRes RAW or 8K HEVC editing, you need Pro M5's extra GPU cores and RAM. Most "video editors" we ask are actually editing 1080p YouTube content - Air is fine.
iPad for digital art - depends on Pencil Pro use
Both support Pencil Pro fully. The differentiator is the display:
- Casual / hobbyist artist: Air. The LCD is excellent and 60Hz inking is fluid.
- Professional illustrator (commercial colour work): Pro. The Tandem OLED's wider gamut, true blacks, and 120Hz lower latency are real workflow improvements.
- 3D sculpting / Nomad / Octane: Pro. M5 GPU is meaningfully faster.
Repair cost comparison
| Repair | iPad Air M4 (11″/13″) | iPad Pro M5 (11″/13″) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen replacement | AED 850 / AED 1,250 | AED 1,950 / AED 2,650 | Pro 2.1× - OLED is $$ |
| Battery replacement | AED 480 / AED 580 | AED 580 / AED 680 | Pro slightly more |
| Charging port (USB-C) | AED 380 | AED 480 (TB controller) | Pro more complex |
| Back-housing dent (cosmetic) | AED 280 | AED 380 | Pro thinner aluminium |
| Logic-board repair | AED 800 (board level) | AED 1,200 (board level) | Pro more layers |
Important: iPad Pro M5's Tandem OLED screen costs more than 50% of a new Air to replace. If you're the type to drop tablets, the Air's cheaper repair cost is a real ownership advantage. AppleCare+ helps - AED 449 covers two screen replacements at AED 199 each.

Frequently asked questions
- Yes - overwhelmingly. M4 chip with 8 GB RAM handles every academic workflow: PDF annotation, video lectures, group calls, spreadsheets, even basic engineering software via remote desktop. Pro M5 is overkill for students.
- Functionally identical - squeeze, barrel-roll, haptic feedback, hover, all work. The only difference is screen latency: Pro M5 has marginally lower (~9 ms vs ~12 ms) due to ProMotion. Imperceptible for most users.
- Less so. M5 is 3nm with revised thermal interface. Sustained heavy load (long Octane render or extended 8K export) still warms the back, but no thermal throttling like the M2/M4 generation. Air M4 also runs cool.
- Yes - single external display up to 6K via USB-C, mirrored or extended (iPadOS 17+ supports proper extended display). Pro M5 also supports one external, but at higher refresh rates via Thunderbolt 4.
- 11″ if you carry it daily and use it for note-taking. 13″ if it stays at home/desk and you want a big media / drawing surface. The 13″ Air is genuinely the best 'second screen' iPad value in 2026.
- Not really - Vision Pro doesn't currently use iPad as a content source. If anything, an Air M4 paired with a Mac is a more useful Vision Pro ecosystem setup.
