Mac Mini M4 (2024) - Worth Buying in 2026?
Quick answer
Quick answer
Mac Mini M4 is the value pick of Apple's current lineup. Tiny new chassis (12.7 cm square), M4 chip, 16 GB RAM standard (Apple finally moved off 8 GB), starts at AED 2,599. For office work, web dev, light Final Cut, and home use it is overpowered for the money.
What's new in M4 Mac Mini
- Smaller chassis: 12.7 × 12.7 × 5 cm - half the footprint of the previous boxy Mini.
- 16 GB base RAM: doubled from 8 GB on M2. Huge for longevity.
- Front-facing ports: 2 × USB-C + 3.5mm headphone on the front for the first time.
- M4 chip: 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, supports Apple Intelligence.
- Power button on the bottom: divisive design choice. Lift the unit to power on. (Stays on 99% of the time anyway.)
vs Mac Mini M2 - massive upgrade
| Spec | Mac Mini M2 (2023) | Mac Mini M4 (2024-26) |
|---|---|---|
| Base RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| Base SSD | 256 GB | 256 GB |
| CPU benchmark (Geekbench 6 single) | ~2,610 | ~3,800 |
| CPU benchmark (multi) | ~9,800 | ~14,900 |
| Footprint | 19.7 × 19.7 cm | 12.7 × 12.7 cm |
| Front USB-C ports | 0 | 2 |
| Apple Intelligence | No (chip too old) | Yes |
| Base UAE price (April 2026) | Discontinued - used AED 1,800 | AED 2,599 |
vs Mac Mini M4 Pro - worth +AED 1,500?
Mac Mini M4 Pro starts at AED 4,499 with 24 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. The M4 Pro chip has 12 CPU cores (8 performance + 4 efficiency), 16 GPU cores, and three Thunderbolt 5 ports instead of three Thunderbolt 4.
Worth the upgrade if you do: 4K+ video editing in Final Cut / Premiere / DaVinci, run multiple Xcode iOS simulators simultaneously, work with large Logic Pro sessions (50+ tracks), or compile large codebases (Rust, C++, large monorepos).
Skip the Pro if you do: Office, web browsing, Photoshop, light Lightroom, occasional 1080p iMovie, web dev with one VS Code + browser. The base M4 handles all of this without breaking a sweat.
vs MacBook Air M4 - saves money but no display/battery
MacBook Air M4 13" with 16 GB / 256 GB: AED 5,199. Mac Mini M4 same specs: AED 2,599 + AED 1,800 for a decent 27" 4K monitor + AED 600 for keyboard/mouse = AED 5,000. About the same total. The Air gives you portability + battery + Retina screen + speakers; the Mini gives you a bigger desktop screen + better thermals + future upgrade flexibility (swap the monitor in 5 years, keep the Mini).
Choose Mac Mini if you have a fixed desk and want the larger screen. Choose MacBook Air if you ever work from coffee shops or move between rooms. See the full MacBook lineup comparison.
vs iMac M4 - no built-in display
iMac M4 24" starts at AED 5,799 with the 4.5K Retina display included. Beautiful all-in-one but locked at 24" forever. Mac Mini + 27" external 4K is cheaper, gives you a bigger screen, and lets you upgrade the screen and the computer independently. iMac wins on cleanliness (single cable to the wall) and design - Mini wins on flexibility and total cost for a larger workspace.

Resale value 2 years out
Apple Silicon Mac Minis hold value well. Expected April 2028 resale on a base M4: AED 1,500-1,700 (58-65% retention) - better than MacBook resale due to lower cosmetic wear (sits on a desk untouched). The new compact form factor is also expected to age better visually than the 2010s rectangular design.

Frequently asked questions
- No - RAM is unified memory soldered to the M4 chip. You must choose at purchase. Upgrade to 24 GB (+AED 750) is highly recommended if budget allows; future-proof for 6+ years.
- Officially no (soldered). Unofficially, the M4 Mini SSD is on a removable daughtercard and we have replaced failed units in our workshop, but Apple does not sell upgrade kits. Buy with the storage you'll need.
- Yes via the rear USB-A ports (still present on M4). New M4 has 2 USB-C front + 1 USB-A + 3 Thunderbolt 4 (rear) on base, or 3 Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro. Bluetooth keyboards / mice work natively.
- Yes - all M4 Macs support Apple Intelligence including the base 16 GB Mini. The 8 GB minimum was the constraint that's now met by default.
- Light gaming yes (Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, Baldur's Gate 3 native ports run well at 1440p). For AAA gaming a Windows PC remains better value, but Apple Silicon Mac gaming has improved dramatically since 2024.
- Idle: 6-8 W. Light use: 12-15 W. Heavy load: 50-65 W. Running 24/7 at moderate use costs roughly AED 8-12 per month on DEWA tariff. Excellent for home server / Plex / Home Assistant.
