Apple M5 Chip vs M4 - What's Actually Different
Apple released M5 in October 2025. Here's the real performance gain over M4.
Apple M5 Chip vs M4 - What's Actually Different?
Quick answer
M5 architecture overview
Apple announced M5 on 30 October 2025 and shipped first units (MacBook Pro 14/16, iPad Pro) on 14 November 2025. M5 is built on TSMC's third-generation 3nm process (N3P), the same node family as M4 (N3E) but with a denser library and improved transistor performance. Roughly:
- Process: TSMC N3P (M4 was N3E)
- Transistor count: ~30 billion (M4: 28 billion)
- Die size: ~165 mm² (M4: 158 mm²)
- CPU layout: 4 Performance + 6 Efficiency cores (same as M4)
- GPU layout: 10 cores (same count as M4 base) with redesigned shader cores
- Neural Engine: 16-core, 38 TOPS - same TOPS rating as M4 but with new "Neural Accelerators" delivering 4× matmul throughput
- Memory: LPDDR5X-8533 (M4: LPDDR5X-7500), 153 GB/s bandwidth on M5 base
CPU performance - 14% single-core, 22% multi-core gains
Geekbench 6 averages from our workshop (3-run mean, MacBook Pro 14 base configurations):
| Test | M4 score | M5 score | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-core | 3,890 | 4,580 | +18% |
| Multi-core | 15,200 | 17,950 | +18% |
| Cinebench 2024 single | 168 | 194 | +15% |
| Cinebench 2024 multi | 1,015 | 1,260 | +24% |
| Xcode build (50k LOC Swift) | 94 s | 78 s | 17% faster |
Apple's official claim was "up to 14% single-core and 22% multi-core." Real-world numbers run slightly higher (15-24%) depending on workload - IPC improvements compound across longer tasks.
GPU + Neural Accelerators - 4× AI workload boost
The GPU is the big story. Same 10-core count as M4 base, but each shader core now contains a dedicated "Neural Accelerator" - a matrix-multiplication unit that handles AI inference inside the GPU rather than handing it to the Neural Engine. Result: applications that use Metal Performance Shaders or Core ML (Stable Diffusion, Whisper, Llama, Photoshop AI features) see massive gains:
| Workload | M4 | M5 | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable Diffusion XL (1024×1024, 30 steps) | 8.2 s | 2.1 s | 3.9× faster |
| Llama 3 8B local inference | 32 tok/s | 44 tok/s | +38% |
| Whisper Large v3 (1 hr audio) | 94 s | 31 s | 3× faster |
| Blender BMW (GPU) | 38 s | 27 s | +29% |
| Final Cut: 4K ProRes export (10 min) | 3 m 22 s | 2 m 51 s | +15% |
| Ray-tracing (3DMark Solar Bay) | 9,800 | 13,400 | +37% |
Second-generation hardware ray tracing is the visible improvement for 3D and gaming. Cyberpunk 2077 native (in Crossover or Rosetta 2) runs ~30% faster on M5 vs M4.
Memory bandwidth (~30% increase)
M5 base: 153 GB/s (M4 was 120 GB/s - that's actually +27.5%). M5 Pro: 273 GB/s (M4 Pro: 273 GB/s - same). M5 Max: 546 GB/s (M4 Max: 546 GB/s - same). The bandwidth jump is concentrated on the M5 base. For the Pro and Max tiers, Apple kept bandwidth flat and invested the silicon budget in core count and Neural Accelerators.
Battery efficiency (similar)
Apple's claim of "up to 24 hours" for M5 MacBook Pro 14 vs "up to 22 hours" for M4 is essentially within the margin of error. Our real-world web-browsing test (50% brightness, Wi-Fi, 12 tabs): M4 = 16 hr, M5 = 17 hr. The N3P process is marginally more power-efficient but the higher clocks offset most of the gain.

| Neural Engine | 16-core, 38 TOPS | 16-core, 38 TOPS | 16-core, 38 TOPS |

Which Macs have M5 (April 2026 list)
- MacBook Pro 14″ M5 / M5 Pro / M5 Max - released November 2025
- MacBook Pro 16″ M5 Pro / M5 Max - released November 2025
- MacBook Air 13″ / 15″ M5 - released March 2026
- iPad Pro 11″ / 13″ M5 - released November 2025
- Mac mini M5 / M5 Pro - released January 2026
- iMac 24″ M5 - released February 2026
- Mac Studio M5 Max / M5 Ultra - released March 2026
Still on M4: nothing currently - M4 has been fully phased out by Apple as of April 2026 (still available discounted at resellers).
Should you upgrade from M4? (probably not yet)
If you own M4: The 18% CPU bump is real but you will not feel it in everyday use. Wait for M6 (expected late 2026/early 2027). Selling your M4 now to fund an M5 will cost AED 2,500-3,500 net after depreciation.
If you do AI/ML work: The 38-390% AI workload gain is genuinely meaningful. Upgrade justified.
If you own M3 or earlier: Skip M4, jump to M5. The gap is now large enough to feel.

Frequently asked questions
- Yes - TSMC N3P (3nm 'enhanced'), same family as M4's N3E but with denser cells and ~5% better power-performance characteristics. Not as big a jump as the M2-to-M3 node change (N5P → N3E).
- Apple shifted AI compute strategy. The Neural Engine stays at 38 TOPS but new 'Neural Accelerators' inside each GPU shader core handle most modern AI workloads, delivering up to 4× throughput on real applications without raising the headline TOPS number.
- Yes - both. M5 MacBook Pros ship with Wi-Fi 7 and Thunderbolt 5 (80 Gbps, 120 Gbps boost mode for displays). M4 was Wi-Fi 6E and Thunderbolt 4 only.
- Apple's typical cadence is 12-18 months between M-series generations. M6 is expected late 2026 (MacBook Pro) or early 2027. Likely on TSMC N2 process - could be a bigger jump than M4-to-M5.
- No. Apple Silicon is soldered to the logic board, including unified memory and SSD. Upgrading the chip means replacing the logic board, which costs more than buying a new Mac.
