Mac Studio M3 Ultra vs M4 Max - 2026 Comparison
Strange Apple move - selling both at once. Here's which actually wins for what.
Mac Studio M3 Ultra vs M4 Max - 2026 Comparison?
Quick answer
Quick answer
Apple's March 2025 launch was unusual: Mac Studio came in two chip variants from different generations. M3 Ultra (chiplet-fused two M3 Max chips) for top-tier multi-core and memory. M4 Max for newer single-thread architecture. Both ship today, both supported. Which to buy depends entirely on your workflow.
Why Apple released both in March 2025
The M4 Ultra didn't arrive on schedule - Apple's UltraFusion interconnect for M4 ran into yield issues. Rather than delay Studio entirely, Apple shipped the M3 Ultra (proven silicon, exists since 2023's Mac Studio refresh) alongside the new M4 Max. The result: two valid Mac Studio configurations covering different parts of the pro market.
M4 Ultra is expected for late 2026 / early 2027. If your workflow can wait and you need absolute peak Mac performance, that's the one to wait for.
M3 Ultra strengths (32 cores, 512 GB RAM max)
- 32 CPU cores (24 performance + 8 efficiency) - most cores in any Mac.
- 80 GPU cores - 2.5× the M4 Max's 32 cores.
- 512 GB unified memory max - Mac territory previously reserved for 2019 Mac Pro Xeon (and that maxed at 1.5 TB but with terrible bandwidth).
- 800 GB/s memory bandwidth - feeds the cores at full tilt.
- Thunderbolt 5 - 6 ports.
- 32-core Neural Engine - large LLM inference at 192 GB+ becomes practical.
M4 Max strengths (newer arch, faster single-thread)
- Newer M4 architecture: ~15% IPC improvement vs M3.
- Faster single-core: Geekbench single ~3,950 vs M3 Ultra's ~3,200.
- Lower idle power: ~30 W vs M3 Ultra's ~85 W.
- Cheaper: AED 8,499 base vs AED 14,999 for M3 Ultra base.
- Apple Intelligence: full M4-generation Neural Engine.
- Thunderbolt 5: 6 ports (same as Ultra).
Multi-core workloads - M3 Ultra wins
| Test | M4 Max (16-core) | M3 Ultra (32-core) | Ultra advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 22,510 | 30,800 | +37% |
| Cinebench 2024 CPU | 1,820 | 2,950 | +62% |
| Cinebench GPU | 16,200 | 32,400 | +100% |
| Blender BMW render (CPU) | 1:14 | 0:42 | +76% |
| Blender BMW render (GPU) | 0:18 | 0:09 | +100% |
| DaVinci Resolve 8K export | 5:50 | 3:20 | +75% |

| x264 4K H.264 encode (CPU) | 180 fps | 295 fps | +64% |
Single-thread workloads - M4 Max wins
The M4's per-core performance edge matters in apps that can't fully parallelise:
| Test | M4 Max | M3 Ultra | M4 Max advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 3,950 | 3,200 | +23% |
| Xcode incremental Swift build | 12s | 14s | +17% |
| Logic Pro live monitoring latency | 1.2 ms | 1.8 ms | Lower is better |
| Photoshop Liquify on 1 GB file | Smooth | Slight lag | Single-thread bound |
| Excel large workbook recalc | 0.8s | 1.0s | +25% |
| Browser JavaScript (Speedometer 3) | 32.5 | 26.8 | +21% |
AI/ML workloads - split
Apple Silicon's killer feature for AI is unified memory: the GPU can address all system RAM. This makes Mac Studio competitive with server GPUs for large LLM inference, where bandwidth and memory size beat raw compute.
| Model | M4 Max 128 GB | M3 Ultra 256 GB | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Llama 3 8B (Q8) | 98 t/s | 92 t/s | M4 Max (single-thread) |
| Llama 3 70B (Q4) | 9.2 t/s | 14.5 t/s | M3 Ultra (bandwidth) |
| Llama 3 70B (Q8) | Doesn't fit | 8.4 t/s | M3 Ultra only |
| Llama 3 405B (Q4) | Doesn't fit | 3.2 t/s | M3 Ultra 512 GB only |
| Stable Diffusion XL (1024 px) | 8.5 sec/image | 4.2 sec/image | M3 Ultra (GPU cores) |
| Whisper Large v3 transcription | Real-time × 22 | Real-time × 28 | M3 Ultra slight edge |
For local LLM hosting and serious AI workflows, M3 Ultra with 256 GB or 512 GB RAM is currently the best value Mac for the job.

Frequently asked questions
- M4 Ultra is expected late 2026 / early 2027 with similar core count to M3 Ultra but ~15-20% per-core improvement and probably 800-1000 GB/s bandwidth. M3 Ultra will not become obsolete - Apple will continue macOS support for at least 6 years from launch.
- No - unified memory is part of the SoC. Buy with the RAM you need for the device's lifetime. Conservative rule: pick the next tier above your current peak usage.
- Yes, dramatically. Geekbench multi-core M3 Ultra ~30,800 vs 28-core Mac Pro ~22,000. Plus M3 Ultra includes a GPU equivalent to a Radeon Pro Vega II Duo, integrated. Single chip beats Mac Pro at most workflows.
- M4 Max for editing under 6K (most workflows). M3 Ultra only if you cut 8K+ multi-cam or do heavy fusion compositing in DaVinci. Don't pay the Ultra premium for 4K editing - wasted.
- Yes - and three more 4K displays simultaneously. M3 Ultra Mac Studio drives up to 8 displays total via daisy-chained Thunderbolt 5 / DisplayPort.
- Yes - fans ramp higher because of higher TDP. Idle: both silent. Sustained Cinebench: M4 Max ~30 dB, M3 Ultra ~37 dB. Both quieter than typical office HVAC.
