Why recovery is harder on Apple Silicon
Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) and T2-equipped Intel Macs (2018-2020) cryptographically tie the SSD to the specific Mac's logic board:
- The SSD is soldered directly to the logic board on most MacBook Air and 13″ Pro models from 2018 onwards.
- The Secure Enclave (T2 or built into Apple Silicon SoC) holds the encryption key. Without that exact chip, the data on the storage NAND is unreadable ciphertext.
- FileVault adds a second layer of encryption on top, tied to your account password.
What this means: Unlike a 2015 MacBook Pro where we could pull the SSD and read it on any other Mac, on Apple Silicon we have to keep the original logic board functional or transplant the Secure Enclave chip itself. Both are board-level micro-soldering jobs.
FileVault encryption challenges
FileVault is a great security feature and a real obstacle to data recovery. If you have:
- Your account password: We can decrypt the recovered data trivially. ~95% success on the data layer.
- Your FileVault recovery key (the 24-character code Apple shows you when you turn FileVault on): Same - full decryption possible.
- Neither password nor recovery key: The data is unrecoverable as plaintext. Even if we extract the raw NAND chips perfectly, the result is encrypted noise. No legitimate service in the world can break AES-XTS-256.
Do this now if your Mac still works: System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault → check the recovery key, screenshot it, store in a password manager.
T2 chip recovery limits
For 2018-2020 Intel Macs with the T2:
- If the T2 chip is alive but the rest of the logic board is dead: we can transplant the T2 + storage region to a donor board. ~85% success.
- If the T2 itself is dead (overheating failure or liquid damage): the data is cryptographically unrecoverable. We're transparent about this.
- Diagnostic step: we measure T2 voltages and bus signals first. Free check. If T2 is gone, we don't take your money.
Water-damaged drive recovery
Time matters. Recovery success drops sharply with corrosion:
- 0-48 hours after spill, Mac never powered on after: ~80% success. We disassemble, ultrasonically clean board in pure isopropyl, dry under vacuum, attempt boot.
- 3-7 days, with one or two boot attempts: ~60% success. Some traces corroded but SoC and Secure Enclave usually still salvageable.
- 1+ week, multiple boot attempts, visible corrosion: ~40% success. Often requires chip-off and reconstruction.
- Saltwater (Persian Gulf swim incident): 30% lower success across all timelines. Saltwater is far more destructive than fresh water.
See our MacBook water damage immediate action guide if you've just had a spill - what you do in the first hour matters more than anything we do later.
Logic board failure recovery
Most "dead MacBook" cases are logic-board faults - one component on the board has failed (commonly: SMC controller, U7000 charging IC, GPU on Intel models, ISL chip on M1/M2). The storage is fine. Recovery options:
- Repair the board: AED 800-1,400 depending on the fault. Mac boots normally, you keep all data and the working machine. We try this first whenever feasible.
- Donor-board transplant: We move the working storage region (Apple Silicon: SoC + storage chips; T2 Macs: T2 + storage) to a donor board. AED 800-1,200. You keep the data; the Mac's serial changes (cosmetic only).
- Direct NAND extraction: For non-encrypted Macs only. We pull data via JTAG/SPI. Last resort.
SSD chip-off process (last resort)
When the logic board is too damaged for board-level repair:
- Desolder the NAND storage chips from the dead board (BGA reflow at controlled temperature).
- Read the raw flash data via a chip-off programmer.
- Reconstruct Apple's proprietary file-system layer (APFS + Secure Enclave key wrapping).
- For non-encrypted: rebuild the file system, recover files. ~60% success.
- For encrypted (T2 / Apple Silicon): chip-off only works if we also recover the Secure Enclave chip and the user provides FileVault password / recovery key. Success drops to ~40%.
Chip-off is destructive - the Mac will not boot again after this process. Only used when the Mac is already unrepairable.
Cost expectations
Most cases land at AED 600-900. Pure water-damage cases run AED 1,200-1,800. Worst-case chip-off recovery on a fully encrypted Apple Silicon MacBook with no recovery key tops out at ~AED 2,000 and may still fail (we'll tell you the realistic odds upfront).
Time required
- Logic-board repair recovery: 1-3 business days.
- Donor-board transplant: 3-5 business days.
- Water-damage recovery: 5-10 business days (cleaning, drying, attempt, diagnose, retry).
- Chip-off reconstruction: 7-14 business days.
- Rush option: +50% fee for priority queue (clinical use, business-critical files).
Success rates (honest)
Average success rates from our 2025 records (1,247 MacBook recovery cases):
- Intel MacBooks (no T2): 94% successful recovery.
- T2 Intel MacBooks: 78%.
- Apple Silicon, no FileVault: 76%.
- Apple Silicon, FileVault on, password known: 71%.
- Apple Silicon, FileVault on, password unknown: 12% (and only when we get the recovery key from iCloud).
- Water damage, ≤48 hours: 79%.
- Water damage, ≥1 week: 41%.
We give realistic estimates after diagnostic - never sell false hope.
Bring your dead MacBook to our data recovery workshop for free diagnosis. We also run a separate MacBook water-damage repair service if the Mac itself is salvageable. Apple's official data-recovery policy is at support.apple.com (Apple does not offer data recovery - this is the answer they give).
Frequently asked questions
- No. Apple's policy is explicit: they do not offer data recovery. They will replace the logic board (which contains your storage on M1+ Macs) and you lose everything. This is exactly why third-party recovery exists.
- AED 400 for simple logic-board faults with intact drives, AED 600-900 for T2 / Apple Silicon with cooperative encryption, AED 1,200-1,800 for water damage, up to AED 2,000 for chip-off reconstruction. Free diagnostic, no recovery = no fee.
- Only if you have either your account password or the FileVault recovery key. AES-XTS-256 encryption is not breakable by any legitimate service worldwide. With the password / key, recovery success matches non-encrypted cases (~75-95%).
- Yes - but only via specialised micro-soldering. The SSD chips are soldered to the logic board and tied to the Secure Enclave inside the M-series SoC. We transplant either the entire storage region or the SoC itself. Success rate ~75% without FileVault, ~60% with FileVault if you have the password.
- 1-3 days for simple cases (logic-board fault, drive intact), 5-10 days for water damage, up to 2 weeks for chip-off recovery on Apple Silicon. Rush service available at +50% fee.
- Three things: (1) Turn on iCloud Drive - it's free up to 5 GB and syncs Desktop + Documents. (2) Use Time Machine with an external SSD, weekly. (3) Save your FileVault recovery key to your iCloud account or a password manager. The recovery key alone is the difference between a 70% and 12% data-recovery success rate.
