Budget - iPhone 11 / 12 (still capable in 2026)

iPhone 11 (Sept 2019) and iPhone 12 (Oct 2020) both still get iOS 26 updates in 2026. They handle WhatsApp, Instagram, banking apps, Zoom, Apple Pay, navigation - every daily task - without complaint.

  • iPhone 11 64GB: AED 950-1,100. A13 chip, dual cameras, no MagSafe, 6.1″ LCD.
  • iPhone 11 128GB: AED 1,100-1,300. Better storage value.
  • iPhone 12 64GB: AED 1,200-1,400. A14 chip, MagSafe, OLED, 5G.
  • iPhone 12 mini: AED 1,000-1,200. Same chip, smaller body - niche but loved by small-hand users.
  • Battery: Insist on a unit with battery health above 85% or a fresh OEM-equivalent battery installed.

Sweet spot - iPhone 13 / 14 (the value champions)

If you're spending AED 2,000 on a refurb, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 give you 95% of a new iPhone 16 experience for 50% of the price.

  • iPhone 13 128GB: AED 1,800-2,000. A15 chip, dual 12MP cameras, 6.1″ OLED, MagSafe, IP68.
  • iPhone 13 mini 128GB: AED 1,600-1,800. Small but mighty - discontinued, so stock dwindling.
  • iPhone 14 128GB: AED 2,200-2,400. Same A15 as 13, slightly better cameras, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via satellite.
  • iPhone 14 Plus: AED 2,500-2,800. Big screen + huge battery (28-hour video).
  • iOS support: Both will get iOS 27 (2026), iOS 28 (2027), likely iOS 29 (2028). Easily 4-5 years more useful life.
  • Apple Intelligence? No - Apple Intelligence requires A17 Pro or later. Not on 13 or 14.

Premium refurb - iPhone 15 Pro

The iPhone 15 Pro at AED 3,200-3,600 (256GB) gets you the first iPhone with USB-C, titanium chassis, A17 Pro chip, and crucially Apple Intelligence support. Compared to a new iPhone 17 (AED 3,799), you save AED 200-600 and lose only the latest cameras and a slight battery improvement.

  • iPhone 15 Pro 128GB: AED 2,900-3,200. Skippable - bump to 256GB for AED 300 more.
  • iPhone 15 Pro 256GB: AED 3,200-3,600. The buy.
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max 256GB: AED 3,800-4,200. 5× telephoto, larger battery, bigger screen.
  • Apple Intelligence: Yes - full support for Genmoji, Image Playground, Writing Tools.
  • Common issue: Some 15 Pro units overheat under sustained heavy load - Apple fixed in iOS 17.0.3. Verify the unit isn't an early-batch problem unit.

What "refurbished" actually means

The word "refurbished" is unregulated in UAE. It can mean three very different things:

  • Apple Certified Refurbished: Returned to Apple, fully tested, new battery + casing, 1-year Apple warranty. Sold via apple.com/ae/shop/refurbished - currently limited inventory in UAE.
  • Workshop refurbished (us): Wholesale-acquired pre-owned units, fully tested, battery replaced if < 90%, screen replaced if scratched, 6-month workshop warranty.
  • Box refurbished (eBay / Dubizzle): Cleaned, repackaged, possibly with an aftermarket screen and unknown battery. No warranty. Avoid.

What to check before buying refurb

Run through this checklist before you hand over money. Takes 5 minutes:

  1. iCloud lock check: Settings → General → About → check "Activation Lock" line. Or boot the phone fresh - if it asks for an Apple ID, it's locked. Walk away.
  2. IMEI check: Dial *#06# to get IMEI. Verify on apple.com/check-coverage that the device exists and isn't reported lost/stolen.
  3. Battery health: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Insist on 85%+ or a documented battery replacement.
  4. True Tone working: Settings → Display → True Tone toggle present and working. Missing = aftermarket screen.
  5. Face ID working: Try registering a new face. Failure = damaged TrueDepth module.
  6. Cameras: Test all lenses (main, ultra-wide, tele, front). Open Camera in low light - check for spots/dust.
  7. Speakers + mic: Make a voice memo, play it back, then call someone.
  8. Charging: Plug in and verify charging starts within 5 seconds.
  9. Buttons: Volume up/down, side button, Action Button (15 Pro+), all responsive.
  10. Frame inspection: Hold under bright light at angle - check for bend, chips, separation between frame and screen.

Battery health expectations

Apple considers a battery "service" candidate at 80% maximum capacity. Refurb buying rules:

  • 95%+: Excellent. Likely a barely-used trade-in.
  • 85-94%: Normal for a 2-3 year old phone. Acceptable.
  • 80-84%: Negotiate AED 200 off OR insist on battery replacement.
  • Below 80%: iOS shows "Service" warning. Insist on new battery or walk away.
  • "100%": Either brand new, freshly replaced, OR an aftermarket battery showing fake reading. Verify with our diagnostic if unsure.

Need a battery replaced after purchase? From AED 250 with 12-month warranty.

Warranty expectations

  • Apple refurb: 1 year, full Apple warranty.
  • Us: 6 months covering battery, screen, charging port, speaker, camera.
  • Carrefour / Sharaf DG: Typically 3-6 months, retailer-managed.
  • Dubizzle / WhatsApp: "DOA only" or none - if anything fails after delivery, you eat the cost.

iCloud lock - biggest scam to watch for

Activation Lock (iCloud lock) ties an iPhone to an Apple ID. The phone will not factory-reset or activate without that Apple ID. Apple cannot remove it, neither can we. Locked iPhones are essentially expensive paperweights.

Common scam: seller wipes the phone in front of you (looks clean), but Activation Lock kicks in on first boot after handover. Always boot the phone before paying, and only buy from sellers willing to do a full activation in your presence.

Inspecting a used iPhone before you commit? We do AED 100 full diagnostics - refunded against any service. Worth it on a AED 2,500 purchase.

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes - from Apple's UAE refurb store, from established workshops with warranty, or from major retailers. Risky from Dubizzle private sellers and WhatsApp resellers without warranty. Always check IMEI, iCloud lock, and battery health.
