MacBook Pro M4 vs M5 - Should You Upgrade?
M5 is faster. But the M4 is cheaper now. Here's the math for Dubai buyers.
MacBook Pro M4 vs M5 - Should You Upgrade?
Quick answer
Quick answer by use case
- Student / writer: Buy M4. The M5 advantage is invisible to you.
- Designer (Figma, Photoshop): Buy M4. Save AED 3,500.
- Developer (Xcode, Docker): Toss-up - M5 16GB feels noticeably snappier in heavy multitasking.
- Video editor (4K ProRes): M5 Pro is the sweet spot. M5 Max only if you do 8K.
- On-device AI / LLM dev: M5 - the Neural Engine jump is real (38 TOPS vs 17 TOPS).
Spec-by-spec - MacBook Pro 14″
| Spec | M4 (2024) | M5 (2025) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU cores | 10 (4P + 6E) | 10 (4P + 6E) | Same count, +18% IPC |
| GPU cores | 10 | 10 | +28% perf, ray-tracing v2 |
| Neural Engine | 16-core, 38 TOPS | 16-core, 38 TOPS | Same TOPS, faster matmul |
| RAM (base) | 16 GB | 16 GB | Same; LPDDR5X-8533 vs 7500 |
| SSD (base) | 512 GB | 512 GB | M5 SSD ~30% faster reads |
| Battery life (web) | 16 hr | 17 hr | +1 hour |
| Display | 14.2″ Liquid Retina XDR, ProMotion | Same panel | Identical |
| Ports | 3× TB4, HDMI, SD, MagSafe 3 | 3× TB5, HDMI, SD, MagSafe 3 | TB5 = 80 Gbps vs 40 |
| Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 7 | Faster on Wi-Fi 7 routers |
| Price (base, UAE) | AED 7,499 (was 8,999) | AED 8,999 | M4 saves AED 1,500 |
Real-world benchmarks
We ran our standard MacBook benchmark suite on both 14″ Pros (M4 base, M5 base, 16GB / 512GB). Numbers are averages across 3 runs in our Media City workshop:
| Workload | M4 time | M5 time | M5 advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xcode build (Swift, 50k LOC) | 94 s | 78 s | 17% faster |
| Final Cut: 10-min 4K ProRes export | 3 m 22 s | 2 m 51 s | 15% faster |
| Lightroom: 200 RAW exports | 1 m 48 s | 1 m 32 s | 15% faster |
| Llama 3 8B local inference | 32 tok/s | 44 tok/s | 38% faster |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 3,890 | 4,580 | 18% faster |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 15,200 | 17,950 | 18% faster |
Translation: for everyday work, the M5 saves you ~15 seconds per minute of compute. Across an 8-hour workday with maybe 30 minutes of actual heavy compute, that's ~4-5 minutes saved per day. AI workloads are where M5 actually shines - 38% is the kind of number that changes a workflow.
Battery life - M5 wins by an hour
Apple rates both at "up to 22 hours video playback", but our real-world web-browsing test (50% brightness, Wi-Fi on, 12 tabs cycling) gave the M5 17 hours vs the M4's 16. That extra hour comes from the slightly more efficient 3nm-N3P process M5 is built on, plus a marginally larger battery (72.4 Wh vs 70 Wh).
Display - exactly the same
14.2″ Liquid Retina XDR, ProMotion 120Hz, 1000 nits sustained / 1600 peak. Identical panel, identical Nano-texture option (+AED 550). If you cracked your M4 screen, the part is the same as an M5 screen - we charge AED 1,000 for either replacement.
Price difference in Dubai (April 2026)
| Model | Apple Store UAE | Authorised resellers (Sharaf DG, etc.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| M4 (2024) - discounted | AED 7,499 | AED 7,199 | Discontinued, limited stock |
| M4 Pro (2024) | AED 9,499 | AED 9,099 | Same chip family |
| M5 (2025) - current | AED 8,999 | AED 8,799 | Current generation |
| M5 Pro (2025) | AED 10,999 | AED 10,599 | 12-core CPU, 16-core GPU |
Spread: M4 base is AED 1,500 cheaper than M5 base at retail. On the used market (Dubizzle, Amazon UAE renewed), M4s are AED 5,500-6,200 - a further 25% off retail.
Resale value of M4 in 12 months
Our resale tracker (compiled from Dubizzle and Carousell sales) projects:
- M4 base bought today at AED 7,499 → April 2027 resale ≈ AED 5,300 (29% depreciation)
- M5 base bought today at AED 8,999 → April 2027 resale ≈ AED 6,800 (24% depreciation)
- Net cost over 12 months: M4 = AED 2,199, M5 = AED 2,199. Identical.
So the upgrade premium isn't really a premium at all if you flip in a year. If you keep for 3+ years, the M5's resale resilience pulls slightly ahead.
Verdict by user type
- Student: M4. You'll never feel the difference. Use the AED 1,500 saved on a 4TB external SSD or AppleCare+.
- Designer: M4. Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma - all GPU-light. Save the money.
- Developer: M5 if buying new. The Wi-Fi 7 + TB5 + 18% CPU adds up over 4 years.
- Casual user (browsing, email, Netflix): M4 Air, honestly. Don't buy a Pro you don't need.
- Video editor (4K): M5 Pro 24GB. The M4 base will throttle on long exports.
- AI / ML developer: M5 Max 48GB. The 38% local-inference jump matters.

Frequently asked questions
- No. The 18% CPU and 28% GPU jump is real but invisible in everyday use. Wait for M6 (late 2026). Selling your M4 to fund an M5 will cost you AED 2,500-3,500 net after depreciation.
- No. Apple supports MacBooks for ~7 years of macOS updates. M4 will run macOS 30 (2030) just fine. The M1 from 2020 is still excellent in 2026 - M4 is dramatically faster than that.
- Only if you have a TB5 dock or external SSD (rare in 2026, common by 2028). For typical use (one external monitor, occasional SSD backup), TB4 on the M4 is more than enough.
- M5 Pro 24GB covers 95% of pro users (designers, developers, 4K editors). M5 Max 48GB only justified if you do 8K video, train ML models locally, or run multiple VMs. Max costs AED 5,000+ more for diminishing returns.
- No. RAM is on-package (unified memory), SSD is soldered. Buy the spec you need on day one. We recommend 16GB for casual, 24GB for pro, 48GB for ML/8K.
- Yes - same Liquid Retina XDR panel, same AED 1,000 repair at our workshop, same 90-day warranty. Apple Store charges AED 2,400 for either.
