Why MacBook Pro screens cost more than Air
Three reasons. First, the display assembly itself. MacBook Air screens are standard Liquid Retina LCDs. The 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro use Liquid Retina XDR - a mini-LED backlight with over 10,000 individually-controlled LEDs behind the panel. That backlight stack alone costs Apple roughly 4× a standard LCD backlight.
Second, the top-case bonding. From the M-series MacBooks onward, the display is bonded to the lid as a single unit - there is no economical way to separate the panel from the aluminum lid without specialist heat-table equipment. Apple replaces the entire lid assembly. We can salvage the lid and only replace the panel + flex cables in about 70% of cases, which saves you AED 300-500 versus the Apple Store quote.
Third, ProMotion calibration. The 14″ and 16″ Pro use a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate that needs to be calibrated against the new panel's pixel response curve after replacement. We use Apple's AST 2 diagnostic suite for this - a 25-minute post-install step that adds to labour cost.
Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) vs standard Retina - repair cost
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros from 2021 onward use Liquid Retina XDR - Apple's marketing name for a mini-LED backlit LCD. The panel itself is technically still LCD, but the backlight is divided into roughly 2,500 local dimming zones for HDR contrast.
For repair this means two things. The part costs more (about 60-80% premium over standard Retina), and the local dimming algorithm needs re-profiling after a swap. If the shop just bolts in a replacement and skips the calibration, you'll see "blooming" (haloes around bright objects on a dark background) within a week. We always profile before handing back.
Tandem OLED (iPad Pro) vs MacBook screens
Apple has not yet shipped OLED on any MacBook as of April 2026 - every shipping MacBook is still LCD. The Tandem OLED panels in the iPad Pro M4 are widely expected to migrate to MacBook Pro in 2027-2028. When they do, repair pricing will jump significantly - iPad Pro M4 OLED replacements already cost roughly twice what an iPad Pro M2 LCD replacement does. If you're buying a MacBook Pro now and plan to keep it 5+ years, today's Liquid Retina XDR is the cheaper-to-maintain choice.
Flexgate explained - 2016-2017 MacBook Pro screens
"Flexgate" was Apple's display backlight flex cable design flaw on the 2016 and early 2017 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro Retina models. The flex cable that ran from the logic board to the display backlight was about 2mm too short - opening the lid past 90 degrees repeatedly fatigued the cable until the backlight either failed completely or showed a distinctive "stage light" effect (a bright bar at the bottom of the screen, dim in the middle).
Apple ran a free repair program for affected 13″ models through 2022. That program is now closed. We still see Flexgate units in the workshop monthly. The fix at our bench is AED 450 - we install a longer aftermarket flex cable that solves the design flaw permanently. If the backlight LEDs themselves are damaged you also need a panel replacement (AED 800 total). 2018 and later models redesigned the cable and are not affected.
Same-day vs ordered parts - when to expect each
We stock 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro panels (M1 Pro through M5) and 13″ Air panels (M1 through M4). WhatsApp before 11am and you'll have the MacBook back the same evening. M5 Max 16″ panels and the M5/M5 Pro 14″ models are usually 1-2 days because the panels are still rationed by Apple to authorised channels. Older Intel MacBooks (2017-2020) take 2-3 days as we order from Sharjah.

Frequently asked questions
- Most 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro and 13″/15″ Air screens are same-day if you arrive before 11am. Older Intel models (2017-2020) usually need 2-3 days for parts. 16″ M5 Max panels and brand-new M5 Pro 14″ models are 1-2 days because Apple still rations the panels.
- About 70% of jobs we do panel-only - we keep the original aluminum lid, FaceTime camera, antenna, and hinges, and only swap the broken glass and LCD layer. That's the AED 300-500 saving versus the Apple Store quote. The other 30% (badly bent lids, hinge damage) need a full lid assembly.
- Yes - provided the technician runs Apple's System Configuration calibration on the new panel. We have access to AST 2 (Apple Service Toolkit) which handles this. Cheap shops skip it and you lose True Tone permanently.
- No. The flex cable design flaw was specific to the 2016 and early 2017 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro Retina. From late 2017 onward the cable was lengthened and re-routed. M-series MacBooks have a completely different display architecture.
- If you have AppleCare+, the screen repair service fee is AED 367 (USD 99 deductible) - cheaper than us. Use AppleCare+. If you don't have it, our pricing beats Apple's out-of-warranty rate by 35-45%.
