Honest rule: the AED 600-800 jump from 256 to 512GB is the best money you'll spend on a student MacBook. Apple's SSDs are not user-upgradable on M-series - buy enough on day one.
RAM matters more on M-series
Apple's unified memory model means RAM is shared between CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. 8GB on an M-chip feels tighter than 8GB on an Intel Mac because the GPU is also pulling from the same pool.
- 8 GB: Bare minimum. Fine for browsing, Word, Zoom - not all at once with 20 tabs.
- 16 GB: Recommended for any student in 2026. Future-proofs through graduation.
- 24 GB: For CS / film / design students who run virtual machines or 4K timelines.
- 32 GB+: ML coursework, 8K video. Most students don't need this.

Buy AppleCare+ if: You drop things, you're a first-year living in dorms, you take it everywhere. The math says one cracked screen + one liquid spill = AED 1,899 saved over 3 years. Worth it.

Frequently asked questions
- On an M1/M2 Air, surprisingly yes for general coursework - Word, Chrome (15 tabs), Zoom, Spotify. It struggles when you add Photoshop, video editing, or 30+ tabs. For a 4-year purchase, 16GB is the safer bet.
- iPad Air with Magic Keyboard is excellent for note-taking and reading PDFs but limited for serious writing, research, programming, and design. For most degrees, a MacBook is the primary computer; iPad is a complement, not a replacement.

- No. All M-series MacBooks have soldered RAM and SSD. Buy the spec you need on day one. This is the single biggest mistake we see students make - saving AED 600 on RAM today, regretting it in year 2.
