Primary school (KG-Grade 5)

Don't buy a MacBook. Most Dubai primary schools (GEMS, Dubai British, Repton, Kings, Brighton College) issue iPads or use Chromebooks in class. A laptop at home for a 6-10-year-old is overkill and a damage liability.

• Best value: refurbished iPad 10th gen 64GB Wi-Fi - AED 1,200-1,400. Pencil-compatible, lightweight, robust with a case.
• Add: Logitech Crayon (AED 280) - cheaper and more durable than Apple Pencil for kids.
• Skip: AppleCare+ on iPad for primary kids - get a Spigen Tough Armor case instead, far better against drops.

Secondary school (Grade 6-12, ages 11-18)

From Year 7/Grade 6 onwards, most Dubai schools (especially British and IB curricula) require a personal laptop for ManageBac, Google Workspace, OneDrive, and increasingly Adobe Creative Cloud Express. MacBook Air M3 13" is the sweet spot.

Why M3 not M4: for school workloads (Google Docs, Safari, Zoom, Photos, light video editing) the M3 is functionally identical to M4. Apple kept M3 in the lineup as the affordable option - buy it.

University general (Business, Arts, Humanities, Computer Science)

MacBook Air M4 13" or 15" with at least 16GB RAM. Base 8GB is no longer sufficient if the laptop needs to last 4 years through to graduation - Sonoma/Sequoia/Tahoe macOS releases keep raising the floor.

• MacBook Air M4 13" (16GB / 256GB): AED 4,800. Best for portability - fits AUD/AUS, Heriot-Watt, BUiD lecture-hall life.
• MacBook Air M4 15" (16GB / 512GB): AED 5,800. Better screen real estate for spreadsheets, group work.
• Computer Science specifically: 16GB minimum (Docker, VS Code with extensions, browser tabs eat 12GB+). Consider 24GB if doing ML/AI coursework.

University engineering, design, video, architecture

MacBook Pro 14" M4 - the Air's lack of fan and active cooling is a real limitation for sustained Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Adobe Creative Cloud workloads.

AppleCare+ for students (recommended)

University-age students drop laptops. The 4-year accidental damage cover is genuinely worth it for student use:

• MacBook Air AppleCare+: AED 999 for 3 years (extendable to 4). Screen accident deductible: AED 350. Other damage: AED 1,099.
• MacBook Pro 14" AppleCare+: AED 1,499 for 3 years. Screen deductible: AED 350. Other: AED 1,499.

Math: one cracked screen on a MacBook Air costs AED 1,800-2,400 out of pocket at Apple. AppleCare+ pays for itself with one accident. Compare to our independent service at AED 600-1,400 - for accident-prone students AppleCare+ still wins, for careful students our pay-as-you-go is cheaper.
