How to check MacBook battery health (3 methods)
- System Settings. Click the Apple menu → System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. You'll see "Normal" or "Service Recommended" plus a "Maximum Capacity" percentage. Below 80% is the official replacement threshold.
- coconutBattery (free third-party app). Shows live cycle count, design capacity vs current full-charge capacity, and the manufacture date. Most accurate quick check.
- Terminal command. Open Terminal and run

When to replace - cycle counts and warning signs
Apple rates M-series MacBook batteries for 1,000 charge cycles while retaining 80% of original capacity. Older Intel MacBooks were rated 1,000 as well; pre-2010 models were 300-500. One charge cycle = one full 0-100% discharge (so two 50% discharges count as one cycle).
Time to replace if you see any of:
- Cycle count above 800 AND capacity below 85%
- "Service Recommended" message in System Settings
- Random shutdowns at 30-50% charge (the cell is unable to deliver peak current)
- Trackpad clicking feels "spongy" or won't click at all (early swelling sign)
- The MacBook lid won't sit flat when closed (advanced swelling - urgent)
- Battery drains faster than 1% per minute when idle (cell internal short)
Swollen battery - emergency action
If you can see or feel the bottom case bulging, or the trackpad has been pushed up: stop using and stop charging the MacBook immediately. Lithium pouch cells that have started to swell are venting flammable electrolyte; continued charging risks thermal runaway. Bring it to us same-day. Top-case battery (M-series) vs swappable (older Intel)
From late 2018 onward, Apple started gluing battery cells directly into the aluminum top case. By the M1 era (2020+), the cells are bonded with a strong adhesive that requires careful prying or solvent (isopropyl alcohol) to release without puncturing.
This is why MacBook battery replacement takes us 60-90 minutes at the bench rather than the 20-minute swap of a 2012 MacBook Pro. We use Apple's recommended adhesive remover and replace the foam shielding underneath - most cheap shops skip the foam, which is what causes "battery rattles" two months later.

DIY MacBook battery - why we don't recommend it
iFixit sells battery kits with adhesive remover for AED 350-500. Tempting. The risks: puncturing a cell with the prying tool (fire risk), tearing the trackpad or speaker ribbon cables that sit under the battery, and not replacing the antenna foam shielding (results in WiFi signal loss). About 1 in 4 customers who try DIY end up bringing us a half-finished MacBook for AED 800+ rescue work. The AED 250 you save isn't worth it.
