- No. The SSD silicon is part of the M-series chip package. Anyone selling you an 'M1 Mac Mini SSD upgrade' is selling you a misunderstanding. We'll show you the teardown to prove it and recommend a Thunderbolt SSD instead.
- They look like SSDs but they're encrypted to the specific M-series chip in your Studio. A third-party module won't boot. Apple-genuine matched modules exist through limited channels - we can quote one for your serial, but it's expensive and a Thunderbolt SSD is usually a better answer.
- A good Thunderbolt 4 SSD (Samsung T9, OWC Envoy Pro FX, SanDisk Pro-G40) runs at 2,800-3,000 MB/s - close to internal NVMe speed for most real-world tasks. Final Cut and Lightroom both work happily off them.
- Yes - for older Mac Mini upgrades we clone the existing macOS install across so you boot to the same desktop. For Mac Studio module swaps we install macOS clean (Apple's pairing process requires it).
- On Mac Mini 2014 and Mac Pro 2019: very low - these are well-documented procedures. On Mac Studio module swap: higher risk because Apple's pairing tools must complete cleanly. We will quote each case and flag risk honestly.
